History
  • The doctoral degree program was established at
    HSE already in 1931.
  • In 1937 the first public defence and publication
    of a doctoral dissertation took place. The first
    Nordic dissertation in the field of Economics and
    business administration by Vilho Paavo
    Nurmilahti, 38, a lecturer and part-time
    librarian.
  • In 1972, Meeri Saarsalmi was the first woman to
    complete a doctoral degree at HSE. She was the
    20th DSc. in HSEs history.

  • Several HSE Dissertations have been awarded
    during the past few years. For example

Objectives of the Doctoral Program
  • Objective of the postgraduate education is that
    the student
  • becomes well-versed in ones own field of
    research and its social significance and gains
    knowledge and skills needed to apply scientific
    research methods independently and critically and
    to produce new scientific knowledge
  • becomes conversant with the development, basic
    problems and research methods of ones own field
    of research and
  • gains the knowledge of the general theory of
    science and of other disciplines relating to
    ones own field of research necessary to follow
    developments in them.
  • In addition, HSEs scientific post-graduate
    education aims to
  • provide students with skills for academic and
    other research
  • and teaching posts and also for tasks demanding a
    very high
  • level of expertise in either the private or the
    public sector.
  • Post-graduate education also aims to promote
    international
  • cooperation.

The Degree Structure

Compensation with Equivalent Courses Completed
Elsewhere
  • Students must complete a minimum of 18 credit
    points from the HSE Doctoral Program in common
    scientific doctoral studies and a minimum of 12
    credit points from the HSE Doctoral Program in
    major subject studies and research-related
    studies.
  • Basic guidelines
  • Replacement courses must be at least equivalent
    to or of higher level in terms of difficulty and
    extent
  • Replacement should be agreed with the person
    responsible for the basket before participating
    in the course.
  • A course may be replaced by one or more courses
    that fulfill certain requirements

Common Scientific Doctoral Studies
  • The common scientific doctoral studies (30 ECTS
    credits) are offered in three different baskets
  • BASKET I research capabilities
  • BASKET II methodologies and methods
  • BASKET III economic theories
  • The objectives of the common scientific studies
    are
  • 1. to improve the intellectual and skilled
    capabilities of the doctoral students
  • 2. to create a solid theoretical foundation for
    the use and understanding of different theories,
    and
  • 3. to intensify the progress in the doctoral
    studies.

Common Scientific Doctoral Studies
Students must earn at least a minimum of 6 ECTS
credits per basket. Credits from the three
baskets need to accumulate altogether at least 30
ECTS credits of common scientific doctoral
studies.

Forms of Dissertation
  • Both Doctor of Science (Economics and Business
  • Admistration) and Doctor of Philosophy degree
  • dissertations can be done in / as
  • monographic form or
  • article-based dissertation or
  • essay-based dissertation.

Article-based Dissertation
  • Own research (all articles doctoral canditates
    own) at least 2 articles and 1 working paper
  • Joint publications at least 3 articles including
    1 of own research and 1 working paper
  • Summary in which the doctoral candidate presents
    the scientific problem of the dissertation and
    the goals of the research, and a review of the
    subject, research methods, materials and findings
    of the research.
  • The publications and the summary shall treat a
    single scientific problem or problem entity so
    that the overall performance of the doctoral
    candidate otherwise corresponds to the
    requirements set for a dissertation.
  • The doctoral candidate's contribution shall be
    apparent from the articles.

  • All HSE dissertations are published in the
    printed form. An electronic version is published
    with an agreement by the author of the doctoral
    dissertation.

    HSE electronic publications portal

Personal Study Plan
  • The Personal Study Plan (PSP or HOPS)
  • is designed to support students in planning their
    studies
  • helps students in forming a general view of their
    studies
  • helps understand the program as a plan of action
    supporting the dissertation writing process
  • students are able to familiarize themselves with
    degree vocabulary and the structure and contents
    of the degree

  • To improve postgraduate education and guidance of
    dissertation research, a systematic monitoring
    and evaluation system is organized and
    maintained. More information on the monitoring

    register either as an attending or as a
    non-attending student each academic year.
  • Update your contact information in WebOodi!
    Students are responsible for updating their
    address and telephone number in WedOodi, as we
    use the contact information in the WebOodi when
    we need to contact the students.
  • Remenber to register for courses and exams in
    WebOodi! Information on how to register for each
    course can be found from the Study Guide.
  • Report your publications and research projects in
    RESCAT! Information on HSE academic publications
    and ongoing research projects are gathered in
    RESCAT (Research Catalogue) database. Doctoral
    students and researchers give information about
    their own research and publications there on
    their own initiative.
