Title: I' Plants Without Seeds

1
I. Vascular Plants angiosperms, gymnosperms,
ferns
2
A. Some vascular plants have seeds
  • They have a greater chance to reproduce than
    plants without seeds.
  • They grow only when conditions are right (not too
    hot or too cold).
  • Groups of seed plants include angiosperms and
    gymnosperms.

3
B. Angiosperms-Flower or Fruit-Bearing Plants
  • Largest classification group of all plants
  • Broken down even further by flower or fruit
  • Their fruit is a ripened seed that contains a
    baby seed inside.

4
C. Gymnosperms
  • Gymnosperm means naked seeds.
  • They have unenclosed seeds (no fruit to cover the
    seeds).
  • Include coniferous plants, which have cones to
    help in reproduction.

5
D. Some vascular plants do not have seeds.
  • These plants do not reproduce by seeds.
  • They reproduce by spores just like non-vascular
plants, but they still are vascular plants.
  • Ferns are both vascular and seedless.

6
E. Ferns
  • Largest group of SEEDLESS plants
  • Grow in a variety of places and have different
    appearances
  • Live in moist habitats
  • Form spores to reproduce
  • The spores are found on the fronds (leaves of the
    fern)

II. Nonvascular Plants Mosses and Liverworts
10
A. Mosses
  • Seedless
  • Grow in moist environments
  • Need water to complete their life cycle
  • Do not have roots, leaves, or stems

11
B. Characteristics of Liverworts
  • Seedless
  • Grow on rock or soil where there is LOTS of water
  • Name came from medieval times when people
believed that since the plant looked like a liver
that it would cure liver disease. This was later
    proved untrue.
