TRENDS TOTAL AWARDS PATENTS ISSUED BY YEAR
Awards Have Shown Steady Overall Increasing
Trend Large Exception Was Dip In 1992 With Sharp
Rebound In 1993 Overall Outlook Should Expect
Continued Increase Next Several Years
7
TRENDS ASSIGNEES CONCENTRATION BY PERCENTILE
The Number of Assignees Is Highly Dispersed, With
Less Than 10 of Assignees Accounting for the Top
25 of Awards Over 80 of Assignees Account for
50 of Awards Analysis Shows These Assignees to
Be Dispersed Among Many Industries As Well
8
TRENDS ASSIGNEES TOP 25 COMPANIES BY YEAR
This and the Next Page Rank the Top 25 Assignees
for Each Year Based Upon Total Awards Note That
There Is Significant Variation Among the
Companies and Their Rankings From Year to Year
(Comments Continued on Next Page)
9
TRENDS ASSIGNEES TOP 25 COMPANIES BY YEAR -
CONTINUED
Note That the Ratio of Total Awards Accounted for
by the Top 25 Assignees Is Steadily
Increasing Consolidation Among Major Global
Industries May Be the Major Driver of This Trend.
Nevertheless Control of Simulation Estates Is
Likely to Continue Consolidating
10
TRENDS ASSIGNEES TOP 25 LOCATIONS BY YEAR
This table shows the annual ranking of the top 25
states in which awards were given Note the
gradual geographic concentration but with the
exception of California and Japan there are
significant variations from year to year.
11
TRENDS INVENTORS CONCENTRATION BY PERCENT OF
INVENTORS
The 7980 Set of Individual Inventors Has Shown a
Relatively Stable Trend in Terms of the
Percentages by Percentile This Reflects a
Significant Diffusion of the Technologists That
Are Producing the Actual Inventions
12
TRENDS INVENTORS CONCENTRATION BY NUMBER OF
INVENTORS
This Chart Reflects the Same Overall Trend Shown
in the Previous Distribution Providing the
Breakdowns by Numbers of Inventors Vs the Ratio
by Percentile The Key Point Is That in Terms of
Absolute Numbers, the Last 2 Years Show Growing
Dispersion
13
TRENDS INVENTORS CONCENTRATION LOCATION OF
INVENTION
While the Numbers of Inventors Show Such
Dispersion, the Geographic Distributions Are
Highly Concentrated The Implication Is That
Geographic Centers of Technological Capabilities
Are Significant and Relatively Stable.
14
TRENDS INVENTORS TOP 25 INVENTORS BY YEAR
This table summarizes the number of inventors and
the percentage of total patents for which they
accounted on a year to year basis. The table
continues on the next page

NEXT THREE SLIDES
The next three slides show the rankings for the
top 25 technical classes involved in the
technological structure by year. ( two years per
slide) The second column of each year shows the
number of patents for the class for the year
the top two lines show the number and percentage
of patents accounted for by the top 25 classes vs
the number of total patents for the year. The
third column provides the descriptive title of
the class

GUIDES FOR USING THE PACKAGE DATA BASES PROVIDED
Microsoft Access
  • FIVE SETS OF CUSTOMIZED DATA BASES ARE PROVIDED
  • ALL SPECIALIAL ANALYTICAL DBs DERIVED FROM THE
    FULL TEXT DB
  • Assignees Set (Owners of the Intellectual
    Property)
  • Inventors Set (Individuals Who Actually Developed
    the Technology and Invention)
  • Titles ( The Title Assigned by the Inventor(s) to
    Their Patent Application and Descriptions)
  • Technologies ( the Technological Disciplines and
Sub-disciplines in the Hierarchies Assigned by
    the Patent Office Examiners )
  • For the Primary Technical Classifications on
    Which the Invention Rests Directly
  • For the Referenced Related Classifications
Employed in Searching for Infringements I.E. The
Overall Legality of Issuing the Patent
  • For the Combined Primary and Referenced
    Classifications Integrated Into a Total
    Technological Infrastructure Defining the
Technologies Upon Upon Which the Patent Was
Developed and Which Were Advanced Thereby
  • Full Text ( the Full Text of All Patents
Containing the Truncated Term Simulat in Their
    Abstracts)

23
GUIDES FOR USING THE PACKAGE DATA BASES
PREPROGRAMMED AIDES PROVIDED Microsoft Access
  • THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PRESET AIDES
  • QUERIES LOCATED IN THE DATA BASE UNDER QUERIES
  • A series of queries related to the data base
title and number with brief descriptions of what
each will do. A click on the relevant query
opens the data base and positions the fields
    considered most relevant
  • FORMS.
  • Three forms which provide capability to review
sets of fields that contain too much information
for intelligible reading field by field . The
forms place the information into a preset order
and reflect the total of each field in vertical
sequence like reading pages of a report.

GUIDES FOR USING THE PACKAGE ASSIGNEE DATA BASES
Assignee 2 by patent numbers lists 5144
individual assignees names, address and patent
numbers Review by Query - Assignee 2 Review
Individual Assignees With Patnumber,
Address Assignee 3 summarizes awards by
individual assignees (2360) by the location where
the award was applied for and made I.e. the same
company or organization may have applied from
more than one location. This will show the number
of awards by year by that location Review by

Notes The queries are designed to facilitate
direct reviews of the data. To get to them open
the Data Base Simulation Analyses 2000-2006 and
check the queries box. Place cursor on the
desired query and the data base will be opened
with fields in a suggested order. Any field can
be filtered or sorted as desired (for example
assignees can be organized by name, by location,
or by numbers of awards per year or for all
years. Users may open the data bases directly and
make their own queries or review the data
directly as they wish. These same notes apply to
all subsequent data base references

GUIDES FOR USING THE PACKAGE THE FULL TEXT
DATABASE
  • The full text data base provides total patent
information as it appears in the files of the
    U.S. Patent office
  • There are five fields
  • Rowall simply a numeric field to permit anytime
return to the original order of the records
since this is the order in which the patents are
    read
  • Patnum the notation of the patent number
related to each line of text within the patent
permits filtering by one or a set of patnumbers
which may be marked for review
  • Category a customized coding of each line
within the patent documentation which permits
filtered reviews for the various categories I.e.
    Patnumber, Main Inventor, Title, Abstract,
    Inventors, Assignees, Application Number, Date
Filed, Current U.S. Classes (The Primary
    References), International Classes, Field of
    Search (Referenced Classes having indirect
relationship to the patent), References to other
patents to which the current patent is related,
    Primary Patent Office Examiner, Assistant
Examiner, Claims Made for what the patent does,
Government Interests (agencies of government have
    interest in the intellectual property,
Description (all other information placed under
the non-standard headings used in the application
usually as designated by the combination of
patent guidelines and inventors or applicants
    choice.
  • Text full line by line narrative as shown in
    the patent document

GUIDES FOR USING THE PACKAGE THE FULL TEXT
DATABASE - CONTINUED
Best way to review is to open the data base
(about 4,452,822 lines) and program search by all
categories or within any field ( can be by word
or number or phrase or name or any other
descriptive definition one might wish to review
in toto as they are reading through the full
text Given the size of this Data Base, it will
be more efficeint to seek the information within
the analytical DBs if they will yield what is
desired.
