  • 4. What situational factors (biographical,
    historical, political, or cultural) apparently
caused the writer to write this text?

3
Listen to the texttry to understand it on its
own terms
  • Give it a fair, impartial, hearing
  • Note organizational signals
  • However, in contrast, or on the other hand ( a
change in the direction of thoughts)
  • First, second, and third (signals parallel points
    or ideas)
  • Therefore, consequently, or as a result (signal
cause and effect or logical relationships)
  • Similarly, also, or likewise ( signal additional
evidence or examples in support of the current
    point.)

  • Tolerate ambiguity and initial confusion
  • Re-read!!!!!! It will be worth it.
  • Annotate the text (use sticky notes)

5
Compose a summary
  • The best way to show you understand an authors
point is to compose a summary.
  • A summary is a condensed version of the texts
main points written in your own words, conveying
the authors main ideas but eliminating the
    supporting details.
