HISTORY OF THE BC SENIORS GAMES
The BC Seniors Games Society was organized in
1987, the first games were in Vernon in 1988
comprising of 15 sports and 650 participants. In
2007 at the Nanaimo Seniors Games, there were
3,500 participants competing in 29 sports. We
are expecting more than 4,000 participants
competing in 29 sports at the Richmond 2009 BC
Seniors Games

INTRODUCTION
  • The BC Seniors Games Society is a Provincial
    non-profit volunteer organization representing
    Seniors and is responsible for organizing the BC
    Seniors Games
  • Sources for financial assistance and support
    include Provincial and Municipal governments
    along with corporate and private sponsors
  • Committees established in each of the 12 zones
    are comprised of volunteers who promote and
    organize their respective zones for the purpose
    of sending participants to the games
  • Provincial Sport and cultural organizations
    provide expertise in Sanctioning sports within
    the games

MISSION STATEMENT
TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH, LIFESTYLE AND IMAGE OF
BRITISH COLUMBIANS AGED 55
  • To define the unique needs of this participant
    group
  • To serve as a bridge between BCs 55 population
    and the provincial and local sport organizations,
    and recreation departments
  • To portray a contemporary image of seniors as
    physically fit and socially engaged
  • To provide an annual opportunity for seniors to
    participate in physical and social activities
  • To promote self- education in the health and
  • social benefits through participation in sport,
    recreation and cultural activities

OBJECTIVES OF THE BC SENIORS GAMES SOCIETY
  • To organize the BC Seniors Games
  • To promote active participation by seniors in
    sport, recreation, fitness, culture, and self
    education
  • To encourage physical, social, and creative
    achievement through participation and friendly
    competition 
  • To engender a sense of community spirit by
    providing the opportunity and catalyst for
    bringing seniors, their families, and the
    community at large, to participate in the BC
    Seniors Games
  • To demonstrate the values and abilities of
    seniors and create an awareness of their
    contribution to the Canadian Lifestyle
