What is SQ3R?

• Method for extracting important information from
  non-fiction text.
• Provides a warm-up to reading
• Develops pre-reading questioning skills
• The steps form a study-friendly note-taking
  system
• Easily integrated into Cornell Notes format

Survey the Assignment

• Scan the assignment looking for the titles,
  subtitles, pictures, captions, diagrams, words in
  bold or italic, or even words with pronunciation
  keys.
• In a textbook, skim the end of section or end of
  chapter questions.

Questioning
What is the equation for area of a circle?
Make a Venn Diagram of 2 Religions of the Middle
East.
What effect did the Treaty of Versailles have on
the countries of Europe?
Draw Label the Water Cycle.

• Using the information that you scanned as the
  subject matter, create possible test questions
  for each.
• The number and difficulty level of the question
  will vary based upon student ability and student
  motivation.

  paying attention to the section headings,
  subtitles, key words, picture captions, diagrams,
  end of section/chapter questions.
• Question-Make questions based upon your survey
  observations.
• Read-Read the assigned material, look for answers
  to your questions or other info that jumps out at
  you
• Write- Write the answers to your questions.
• Review-Study your notes, reread the material,
  revise the notes if necessary.
