Delvis Seda has been driving a Santa Cruz Metro
Bus for four years now. Before becoming the
driver of the blue submarine as he calls it,
Delvis was an English teacher. He also attended
UC Santa Cruz before dropping out. Although he
sees himself as a true traveler, and never likes
to be tied down to one place for too long, he can
see himself at this job for awhile. Many of his
fellow bus drivers have been working this job for
over twenty years Delvis wonders if this will be
the case for him as well.

The camaraderie of the bus drivers is extremely
evident. Here another bus driver named Douglas
hops on Delviss bus for a quick chat. It is this
loyalty and friendship that has made the Local 23
United Transportation Union one of the strongest
in the nation. Delvis then heads out on his
route. First to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, then
over to Scotts Valley, and lastly two loops to
Watsonville.

"Sometimes I feel I have a role in the sense of
being a tuning fork. As an individual, I can make
or break somebody's day depending if I'm on time
and on my attitude. I try to rationalize all of
it, thinking about vibration, speed, and
body...all of these bodies...all of these people
entering into my body. It's almost
Zen-like...empty, refill, empty, refill..."

The bus is a community in and of itself, and
Delvis often sees the same people ride day after
day. The bus is a microcosm of Santa Cruz that is
in a constant state of motion. The Santa Cruz
Metro has the ability to bring together all
different types of people into a common
environment. The bus is a place where peoples
lives intersect and pause for a moment in between
lifes destinations.

"A whole life childhood, adolescence, marriage,
different parts of the country, all the things
that have gone through your head, all the books
you've read, all the bills you've paid, and all
of the sudden they're taking pictures of you in a
blue uniform driving a bus!? You think you're
doing your job, paying the bills, but I'm being
transformed and I don't even realize
