1
Seymour Papert
  • By Katie Hoffman Danielle Rugolo

2
Background Information
  • He has influenced profoundly the field of
    educational technology.
  • Studied with Jean Piaget in Geneva from
    1959-1964.
  • Joined Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at
    the Massachusetts Institution of Technology.
  • He was a mathematician

3
Accomplishment
  • He combined two concepts, integrating an
on-screen turtle into the Logo language with his
MIT team. It has allowed children to move more
easily from concrete operations to more abstract
    or formal ones.

4
Accomplishments Continued
  • In 1980, he published a book filled with his
theories. This book was called Mindstorms
Children, Computers and Powerful Ideas. (this
book made him become one of the first to raise
national consciousness about the potential role
of technology in creating alternatives to what he
perceived as inadequate and harmful educational
    methods.

5
MaMaMeDiA
  • Another site that Professor Papert and friends
helped create for children (and their parents) is
    MaMaMeDiA.
  • This site includes engaging activities to help
children gain technological fluency and expand
their minds through playful learning they can
design and animate characters, make their own
digital cards, invent games, and more.

6
Paperts Thoughts
  • I make a slightly unorthodox interpretation of
Piagets theoretical position and a very
unorthodox interpretation of the implications of
his theory for education (Papert, 1980, p.217)
  • He felt that children could advance with their
abilities more quickly with the right kind of
    environment and assistance.
  • He is a seminal thinker about ways in which
    computers can change learning.

7
LOGO
  • Papert felt that children could teach themselves
    with Logo.
  • Logo was a resource with ideal properties for
    encouraging learning.
  • Graphics oriented allows children to see cause
    and effect relationships.
  • Logo ended up dropping out of common use in the
early 1990s. Although Logo is no longer used
today, Paperts emphasis has had a distinct
influence on the use of newer technology
    resources.

8
Theories Contributions
  • Logo Created childrens toys with built-in
    computation.
  • Logo supported the use of software for learning
    and teaching.
  • Example Leapster Educational Game Library.
(helps children to learn their letters and
    numbers by using a computer.)

9
Applying Paperts Theories to the Classroom
  • Students going to the computer lab to play
educational games to ensure that learning takes
place and to make sure students are having fun.
  • Keeping in touch with their pen pals through the
internet. It will improve their typing skills and
    make it easier to communicate.
