RM General Job Description
  • A Resident Mentor (RM) is a student staff member
    who is employed by University Housing. The RM is
    responsible for mentoring and advising students
    living within a residence hall or area.
    Principal RM duties involve four key areas of
    responsibility
  • (1) Student Development
  • (2) Community Development
  • (3) Floor Management and Administration
  • (4) Building and Departmental Responsibilities

Building and Floor Responsibilities
  • Resident Mentors
  • Build relationships with residents
  • Mentor and advise residents to
  • Implement study groups
  • Plan and implement community service projects
  • Become actively involved
  • Are provided with in-service training to deepen
    understanding of critical issues
  • Return early in August and January for training.
    RMs hired for employment in January 2010 need to
    arrive by January 5, 2010 RMs hired for
    employment for the 2010-2011 school year are
    required to arrive by 500pm on August 1, 2009.
  • Remain after classes end to assist with closing
  • and facilities issues

RM Responsibilities
  • Resident Mentors
  • Are on duty rotating weekdays and weekends
    (scheduling varies by building)
  • Respond to critical incidents
  • Serve as a tour guide during Open House events
  • Work four hours per week at the front desk
  • Are required to take an eight-week RA class that
    meets for 1½ hours per week and counts as an
    elective if you choose to take it for credit
  • Meets weekly with their supervisor for 30min
    60min.
  • Staff from the Horseshoe, Bates House, Bates
    West, Roost, South Quad, West Quad, and East Quad
    are expected to work for parts of Fall, Spring
    and Thanksgiving Break periods.

RM Employment Information
  • Candidates must
  • have completed a minimum of one academic semester
  • have at least a 3.0 USC system cumulative
    previous semester GPA
  • have previously lived in a residence hall or had
    a similar experience (Transfer students ARE
    eligible)
  • be in good standing with the University
  • Attend and participate in training to deepen
    understanding of critical issues
  • Return prior to classes beginning for training.
    RMs are required to be at all of training.
  • Remain after classes end to assist with closing
    and facilities issues.

RM Compensation (Based on 2009-2010 information)
  • The length of employment determines RM salary
  • First year Resident Mentors receive a yearly
    stipend of 4,135 per year,and50 discount on
    housing fees
  • Resident Mentors who have completed 2 semester of
    work with University housing will receive a
    yearly stipend of 4, 310, and50 discount on
    housing fees.
  • Room voice mail is also provided
  • RMs receive a private room.

  • Upon submitting your application online, you will
    need to attend an interview on Sunday, November
    1, 2008 at 6pm, Capstone Campus Room
  • You will receive an e-mail verifying your
    interview time.
  • You will be asked to arrive to your interview
    prepared to participate in an individual
    interview and multiple group scenarios.
  • Offers for open positions will begin after
    interviews conclude up until January 6th and we
    will make offers as openings present themselves
    throughout the year.

    prepared to participate in an individual
    interview and multiple group scenarios.
  • Decision letters will be emailed out before the
    Housing sign up deadline.
  • You must accept or decline by the date provided.
  • After initial offer emails are sent, we will make
    offers as openings present themselves throughout
    the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What if my cumulative GPA is not a 3.0?
  • You may complete an application now. We will
    interview you and you may be looked at to fill an
    unanticipated vacancy when your GPA rises. We
    recommend you GET IT ON FILE with us now. We do
    use cumulative and semester GPA.
  • When will I know if I am hired?
  • Decision letters will be emailed out the end of
    February/beginning of March. If you have been
    selected, you will be offered a specific building
    and assignment. If you have not been selected,
    you will receive an email as well.
  • Can I be a summer RM?
  • In order to be a summer RM, you must have at
    least one semester of work experience as an RM.

  • What should I wear to the interview?
  • Business Casual attire that is pressed and neat.
    Tennis shoes and jeans may not make the best
    impression.
  • What will happen on my interview day (for Fall
    interviews)?
  • You will be placed with a group of your peers.
    You will have a face to face interview with our
    professional staff and participate in four group
    scenarios. The whole interview process will take
    place for approximately 2-3 hours, so please plan
    ahead.
