October Revolution

• Lenin declared time was right for revolution with
  support of the Petrograd Soviet and the Red
  Guards.
• Co-ordinated by Trotsky, Bolsheviks seized key
  points in Petrograd including the Winter Palace.
• Overnight coup, few casualties.

Bolsheviks Position

• Extremely precarious
• SR leader would last no more than a few days.
• Limited power many soviets in control of
  Mensheviks SRs and non-socialists.
• In the countryside, Bolshevik presence virtually
  non-existent.
• Civil servants were on strike.
• State Bank refused to hand over money. It took 10
  days to access funds.

Peace, Bread, Land!

• The Provisional Govt fell due to their inability
  to solve the problems facing Russia in 1917.
• Lenin had promised peace, bread, land.
• He had to deliver this, or their could be a
  potential third revolution.
