8The Peninsula Stroke LRN
Our Research Strategy
- Increasing Recruitment into Research
- Broadening the base of Research
- Developing Research-Active Clinicians
- Fostering Collaboration
- Bridging the Gap from Bench to Bedside
9The State of Stroke Services in the UK
- The NAO (National Audit Office) argues that the
NHS lacks sufficient emergency responses to
stroke and effective acute care, provides too few
services for rehabilitation and support after
discharge from hospital for both patients and
carers and does too little to prevent stroke - BMJ editorial 11/02/06
10Working with the PCRN
- Joint appointment of Primary Care Lead (out to
advert) for the Stroke LRN - Ensuring teams are appointed with joint remit
across acute and community - Engaging community Stroke Units in PCT based
studies e.g. TRACS - Linking with national primary care CSG and
ensuring we are able to support primary care
based studies in the future - Working with PCRN manager within a number of
areas including Patient, Carer and Public
Involvement and the Joint Network Managers Group - Stroke LRN Management Group includes a number of
representatives from our community stroke units
which ensures the group is balanced - PCRN have sent out questionnaire to identify
practices with a current Stroke interest
11A cluster randomised controlled trial of a
structured training programme for caregivers
after stroke
Training Caregivers after Stroke (TraCS)
12Evaluating the effect of a training programme
for caregivers

competency based, with assessment of carer skills

the South West cluster)
14Primary Care Lead for the Local Peninsula Stroke
Research Network
- We are looking for an enthusiastic GP to be
Primary care lead for the Stroke Research Network - Advert circulated to practices and information
available on http//www.jobs.nhs.uk/employers. - Closing date for applications end of September
- Key area of involvement contribute to the
development of potential research
proposals/recruitment strategies and to advise
specialist colleagues about the likely
implications of these developments for Primary
Care - Leads would also work closely with the Peninsula
Medical School and with local practices in
Somerset, Devon and Cornwall - Initially one session a fortnight for 12 months
with review, funding is available until March
2010 in the in the first instance
15Summary
- Important to build an integrated approach with
PCRN and all other research networks - Primary Care Research in Stroke is a work in
progress - Primary Care Lead Clinician will be a key link
- Network is being set up with the whole patient
pathway in mind to ensure future flexibility
