Energy makes things work.
  • Most energy on earth comes from the sun.
  • Energy of movement is called kinetic energy.
  • Energy of position is called potential energy.

3
Most energy travels in waves
  • Some waves (such as sound waves) must travel
through a medium (such as air).
  • Electromagnetic waves do not need a medium to
travel through. They radiate from the source.

4
Waves are measured by their wavelength.
Wavelength is measured from crest to crest or
from trough to trough.
5
Wave Frequency
  • Frequency is the number of wavelengths that pass
by in a certain amount of time.

Frequency is measured in hertz.
6
  • The shorter the wavelength, the higher the
frequency, and the higher the energy.
  • The longer the wavelength, the lower the
frequency, and the lower the energy.

7
The Law of Conservation of Energy
  • Energy cant be created.
  • Energy cant be destroyed.
  • Energy can be converted from one form to another.

8
Converting Energy
9
You Try It!
  • Discuss in your lab groups the different energy
conversions that take place when a candle is lit.
  • In your science notebook, describe the energy
changes that happen when a candle is lit.

10
You Try It!
  • Your journal entry should mention heat and light.

  • Missouri Standards
  • SC 1 - Properties and principles of matter and
    energy.
  • District Standards
  • III C TLW investigate the movement of energy as
    waves through space and matter.

Students will need their science journal or a
piece of paper.
