AMURT started the work in North Tongu in 1991,
first through educational programs about Guinea
worm.

In meetings with village elders it became clear
that the communities needed not only education
they needed a source of safe water.

From the beginning the villagers were organized
and took the lead in directing the project works.

The respect for the elders is an important
tradition in Ghana.

The Mafi Tedeafenui- Dekpoe water project was
completed in 1999 serving 10 villages.

The project is community owned and managed. It
has become a model project and groups from all
over Ghana visit Dekpoe to learn.

AMURT brought a water engineer from the USA to
advise on technical aspects of the operation.

And in 1995, construction of the dam at
Mafi-Zongo began. The project is designed to
serve 30 communities.
