• Among 21 of the most affluent nations, the US has
  the highest percentage of poor children.

  achievement and behavioral actions by children in
  school.
• Family poverty decreases IQ, verbal ability, and
  achievement scores of children.
• The familys economic circumstances and mothers
  academic attainment effect a child greatly.

  less prepared.

• Food stamps
• WIC special supplemental Food Programs for
  Women, Infants, and Children
• School nutrition programs.
• In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson started the
  War on Domestic Poverty
• In 1996, welfare reform bill cut 60 billion in
  aid to poor families within six years. This was
  estimated to throw 1 million more children into
  poverty.
