  • IOOS Press Conference
  • Dr. Andy Clark

"The United States is playing a lead role in
bringing the international community together to
develop an integrated, comprehensive, and
sustained earth observing system of systems that
includes a substantial ocean component, known as
the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). The
U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System will be a
major element of GOOS."
From the Presidents U.S. Ocean Action Plan,
December 2004

The role of industry in the building, operation
and maintenance of the IOOS should be clearly
defined. Industry should not be viewed solely as
a provider of technology or a user of the system,
but as a full partner in the planning,
implementation and operation of the system. This
will require developing joint strategies with
industry, for things as diverse as long-term
sensor and platform technology, protection of
intellectual property rights, and identification
of possible ventures to create value-added
products.
Admiral James Watkins On the IOOS

  • Improve competitive position of U.S. offshore oil
    production

8
Oil Industry Contributions to IOOS
  • D/W currents from roughly 40 sites
  • Figure shows sites in 2004 include temporary
    (3-6 mo) exploration sites
  • Posted in real-time on NDBC/NOAA web site
