Power Supply Problems
These disturbances are caused by a variety of
sources including failures and switching problems
within the electrical transmission and
distribution system, extreme weather conditions
and the operation of heavy industrial and / or
faulty hardware. Mains interruptions are the
only immediate evident disturbances.

within street lighting and communication
applications to the point where hardware damage,
data processing errors and costly downtime
result. Harmonics can also cause unexpected
heating damage to electronic switching.

The increasing interconnectivity and complexity
of many street lighting installations , and their
requirements to operate reliably, dramatically
raises the demand for the correct power solution
to be implemented. Power disturbances can

Minimises Power Up Surges
  • Public Lighting loads contain capacitance.
    This capacitance will contain inrush currents at
    power up.
  • Its intensity depends exactly on the position of
    switch-on within the mains cycle.
  • The LCU protects your equipment from this
    problem by providing a SOFT START control.

The randomisation function is implemented by
programming a pseudo random number into each unit
at manufacture.
The delay times are fixed within each unit. THIS
GREATLY REDUCES UNITS ENGAGING SIMULTANEOUSLY.

  • Overload Short Circuit
  • If the Load Conditioner detects a load current
    exceeding 10 amps it will switch off the load
    within fifty micro seconds.
  • If there is a short circuit the LCU will shut
    down the load within one micro second.
  • In both cases, the load will be reapplied 2
    seconds later. If the fault is still detected the
    LCU will automatically shut-down.

As long as the surge current is less than 30 amps
then the Load Conditioner will not interrupt it.
This allows power factor correction capacitors
up to 300 Micro Farads to be used without
tripping the Load Conditioner.

Attenuation of the higher emissions bands
  • The Tofco Load Conditioner attenuates all
    emissions in the region of 0.5MHz upwards.
  • This should ensure Emissions Compliancy (EN55015
    note 1) in Public Lighting Installations, that
    employ a number of Electronic Ballasts and
    Monitoring Systems.
