Small Numbers Beware!
  • Rates based on a small number of events (less
    than 20) are unstable
  • Aggregating data for a 5-year period helps but
    does not always solve the problem
  • Numbers should be looked at as well as rates

  • Allows comparison of death rates between
    populations with different age distributions
  • Must be adjusted to the same standard population
    for comparison
  • DO NOT compare adjusted to unadjusted (crude)
