A German Recipe

• Lebkuchen (Spice Bars)
• 2 cups honey5 ½ cups flour¾ cup grated
  unblanched almonds1 tsp. cinnamon½ tsp.
  powdered cloves¾ cup mixed candied fruits
  (orange, lemon and citron peel)½ tsp. baking
  powderEgg White Icing (see recipe below)
• Heat honey until thin do not boil. Mix in all
  other ingredients except icing.
• Turn onto floured board and knead until smooth,
  adding a little flour
• if necessary. Roll with a floured rolling pin to
  ½" thickness.
• Grease and flour a baking sheet and lay rolled
  dough on it.
• Bake in pre-heated 350 degrees oven about 20
  minutes.
• Spread with icing while hot cool before cutting
  into rectangles.

• Christmas preparations start before December
  first. Some homes in Germany have several
  Christmas trees. Christmas trees can be seen all
  over the town. They are seen glittering and
  glowing.

• Catholic boys and girls dress up like kings for
  three kings day. They carry a star around the
  village. They sing carols to celebrate the
  season. They also have an advent wreath hung at
  their home. They light one candle every Sunday.

• Children leave letters on their window sills for
  Christkind, a winged figure dressed. Sometimes,
  the letters are decorated with glue and sprinkled
  with sugar to make them sparkle.

• In parts of Germany, people believe that the
  Christ child sends a messenger on Christmas Eve.
  He appears as an angel in a robe and crown,
  bearing gifts. The angel is called Christkind.
