Barcodes
Barcodes appear on everything we buy.
The pattern of thick and thin bars represent the
13-digit number underneath the barcode.
First 2 Digits indicate which country the
product has been registered
The last digit is a check digit which is
calculated from the other digits in the code and
ensures that the barcode is read correctly
Next 5 digits represent the manufacturer's code
The second group of 5 digits represent the
product and package size

Barcodes
Benefits
  • Slow selling items can be identified, preventing
    a build-up of unwanted stock
  • The effects of repositioning a given product
within a store can be monitored, allowing
fast-moving more profitable items to occupy the
    best space
  • Fast selling items can be identified quickly and
    automatically reordered to meet demand
  • Historical data can be used to predict season
    fluctuations very accurately
  • Low cost and extremely accurate

Barcodes
Uses
Banking , government Insurance
Accurate document control retrieval
Cheque book covers, insurance claim files and
council tax forms are bar coded
Warehousing
Raw material containers for cranes relying on
barcodes to move goods in and out
Transport Distribution
Individual packages, trace parcels by GPS
Marketing
Bar coded multiple choice questionnaires to enter
data quickly and accurately
Survey times reduced
Medical
used to identify blood and other samples,
hospital patients and outpatients' record
bar-coded for fast retrieval and better accuracy
Manufacturing
Management is up to date on unfinished products
as all products are bar-coded
Libraries
Record loans and provide more information on stock
5
Keyboard Data Entry
  • Most common input device

Disadvantages
  • Easy to make transcription errors- copy the data
    wrongly from the document
  • Data entry operators are prone to RSI from using
    keyboards to often
  • Time consuming

6
Mouse, joystick, light pen, touch screen
Sensors, detect movement (mouse, joystick, touch
screen) or light (light pen).
7
Scanners OCR
  • The scanner is used to read graphical
    images/photos/typed or handwritten documents
  • Then the Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
software interprets the text and exports it to a
    word processor or data file

Voice Recognition
  • User speaks into a microphone and a software such
as IBM's Voice Pad interprets the text and
    displays it on screen
  • Accuracy is improved by training the voice
recognition system to the user's voice

8
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition
  • MICR devices read, sort and store data from the
magnetic ink on the cheque (for example) and
store the data on a disk.
  • All banks use MICR for processing cheques

Advantages
  • The characters are readable by humans, unlike bar
    codes
  • The characters can be read even if the cheque is
    crumpled, dirty or smudged
  • Its hard to forge the characters

9
Magnetic Stripe
  • On debit/credit/phone cards, the stripe is
    encoded with data
  • can contain a person's personal data,
    purchases...ect

Smart Cards
  • Chip cards are reliable, low cost, easy to use,
    fast, anonymous, secure
  • Like plastic cards with a magnetic stripe but
    contain a microprocessor

OMR
  • Optical Mark Recognition- An optical mark reader
can detect marks made in preset positions on a
    form
  • Marking multiple choice exams, market research
    questionnaires
