The Industrial Revolution
  • Elizabeth Fry was born during the industrial
    revolution
  • There was much unemployment out of cities and
    many people were very poor

  • Many people were driven to crime just to stay
    alive
  • Less people were being put to death for theft so.

Prisons
  • Prison conditions were awful, cramped, dirty,
    smelly and violent.

Prison Ships
  • As a temporary solution to the overcrowding old
    ships were converted into floating prisons

Australia
  • Many convicts were shipped over to Australia, on
    one journey in 1790 of the 928 men and 78 women
    who set sail, 256 men and 11 women died on board.

  • Elizabeth was the fourth in a family of twelve
    children. She was born in Norwich
  • Elizabeth was a Quaker. Quakers are pacifists
    who believe that religion is about repenting and
    striving to be a good person

  • In 1813 Elizabeth visited a prison where, in a
    space of 190 yards overlooked by the men were 300
    women, many half naked with their children. Many
    women were criminals but others falsely accused.
    Many fought, drunk heavily and gambled

  • Fry persuaded the women and the authorities to
    let her start a prison school, it was the first
    of many. Here is a picture of Newgate prison as

  • She was against the death penalty and she
    persuaded the authorities to only give the death
    penalty to those who commited violent crimes on
    others

Reforming
  • Fry helped reform many dangerous prisons, she saw
    to it that the women were working or being
    educated.
  • She also made sure that the women were
    rehabilitated so that they were able to return to
    to outside world having learnt their lesson
