• - For an action already completed before a point
  of time in the past or before another past action
  expressed by the simple past.
• EX We had eaten lunch before they arrived.

• EX By the time I left school, I had learned
  English for about 5 years.
• - For a supposition or wish in the past
  (something contrary to the fact in the past).
• EX1 If you had worked hard, you would have
  passed the exam.
