  • To be concerned with things of this world
  • We are not to become

The Spirit of Worldliness
  • Soft preaching leads to a soft stance on
    moral issues
  • Which leads to false security
  • Examples of this in the OT
  • Isaiah 309-11 Jer 530-31 Jer 613-17
  • Worldliness is also a serious problem today!

righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who
call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

7
Worldliness Presents Itself

    Romans 122
  • And do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind, that
you may prove what is that good and acceptable
    and perfect will of God.

  • It begins in the heart and mind
    Mark 714-20 2 Timothy 222 Romans 122
  • Expressed through the flesh as sin 1 John
    216
  • For all that is in the world--the lust of the
flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of
life--is not of the Father but is of the world.

    Mark 714-20 2 Timothy 222 Romans 122
  • Expressed through the flesh as sin Mark
    721-23 1 John 216
  • We must avoid being trapped by it Hebrews 121
  • Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so
great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside
every weight, and the sin which so easily
ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the
    race that is set
    before us

do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to
    your shame.

12
Seriousness of Worldliness
  • It separates us from God James
    115
  • Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth
to sin and sin, when it is full-grown, brings
    forth death.

13
Seriousness of Worldliness
  • It separates us from God Isaiah
    591-2
  • Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, That
it cannot save Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot
hear. But your iniquities have separated you from
your God And your sins have hidden His face from
you, So that He will not hear.

14
Seriousness of Worldliness
  • It separates us from God James
    115 Isaiah 591-2
  • One loses their reputation Proverbs
    221
  • A good name is to be chosen rather than great
riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.

15

    115 Isaiah 591-2
  • One loses their reputation Proverbs
    221
  • One loses their influence Romans
    224
  • For "the name of God is blasphemed among the
Gentiles because of you," as it is written.

    221
  • One loses their influence
    1 Timothy 412
  • Let no one despise your youth, but be an example
to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in
    spirit, in faith, in purity.

  • One loses their reputation Proverbs
    221
  • One loses their influence Romans
    224 1 Timothy 412
  • It hinders our worship John 931
  • Now we know that God does not hear sinners but
if anyone is a worshiper of God and
does His will, He hears him.

    224 1 Timothy 412
  • It hinders our worship John 931
  • It desensitizes us to sin Psalm 11-3

19
Psalms 11-3
  • Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel
of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of
sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful
But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in
His law he meditates day and night. He shall be
like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That
brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf
also shall not wither And whatever he does shall
    prosper.

  • It hinders our worship John 931
  • It desensitizes us to sin Psalm 11-3
  • Our hearts are hardened Hebrews
    312-13 1 John 518-19

21
Hebrews 312-13
  • Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an
evil heart of unbelief in departing from the
living God but exhort one another daily, while
it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened
    through the deceitfulness of sin.

22
1 John 518-19
  • We know that whoever is born of God does not sin
but he who has been born of God keeps himself,
and the wicked one does not touch him. We know
that we are of God, and the whole world lies
under the sway of the wicked one.

23
Seriousness of Worldliness
  • It breeds other sin 2 Samuel 11
  • Leads to disfellowship
    1 Corinthians 51,11-13

24
1 Corinthians 51, 11-13
  • It is actually reported that there is sexual
immorality among you, and such sexual immorality
as is not even named among the Gentiles--that a
    man has his father's wife!
  • But now I have written to you not to keep company
with anyone named a brother, who is sexually
immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a
reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner--not
even to eat with such a person. For what have I
to do with judging those also who are outside? Do
you not judge those who are inside? But those who
are outside God judges. Therefore "put away
    from yourselves the evil person.

25
2 Thessalonians 36, 14-15
  • But we command you, brethren, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every
brother who walks disorderly and not according to
the tradition which he received from us.
  • And if anyone does not obey our word in this
epistle, note that person and do not keep company
with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet do not
count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a
    brother.

  • Leads to disfellowship
    1 Corinthians 51,11-13 2 Thess 36, 14-15
  • It hinders our race and growth
    Hebrews 121-2
  • Leads to death Romans 623
  • For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

27
The Christian Life
  • A life of holiness 1 Peter 115-16
  • But as He who called you is holy, you also be
holy in all your conduct, because it is written,
"Be holy, for I am holy."

28
The Christian Life
  • A life of holiness 1 Peter 41-3
  • Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the
flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind,
for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased
from sin, that he no longer should live the rest
of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men,
but for the will of God. For we have spent enough
of our past lifetime in doing the will of the
Gentiles--when we walked in lewdness, lusts,
    drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and
    abominable idolatries.

29
The Christian Life

  • And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies
himself, just as He is pure.

  • A life of holiness 1 Peter 115-16 1
    Peter 41-3
  • A life of purity 1 John 33
  • The law by which we live 1 John 34
  • Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness,
    and sin is lawlessness.

31

    Peter 41-3
  • A life of purity 1 John 33
  • The law by which we live 1 John 34
  • Will not continue to sin Romans 61-2 1
    John 35-6

32
Romans 61-2
  • What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin
that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall
we who died to sin live any longer in it?
  • 1 John 35-6
  • And you know that He was manifested to take away
our sins, and in Him there is no sin. Whoever
abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has
neither seen Him nor known Him.

  • Will not continue to sin Romans 6 1 John 3
  • Has respect for Gods word Psalms 11911
  • Desires to be separate from the world 2
    Corinthians 614-17

35
2 Corinthians 614-17
  • Do not be unequally yoked together with
    unbelievers. For what fellowship has
    righteousness with lawlessness? And what
communion has light with darkness? And what
accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a
believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement
has the temple of God with idols? For you are the
temple of the living God. As God has said "I
will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be
their God, And they shall be My people."
Therefore "Come out from among them And be
separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is
    unclean, And I will receive
    you."
