Fence Houses Steering Group
  • The Aim
  • The Community of Fence Houses will be a place
    where people have got the knowledge, skills and
    abilities to be involved in creating a better
    future for everybody.
  • They want there to be a safe, clean inviting
    environment and a community building with local
    ownership and local management.
  • Membership
  • Over 40 members on the Steering Group including
    statutory, voluntary groups/agencies and local
    people
  • Funding
  • The project currently gets funding from
    Barnardos, City of Sunderland Strategic
    Initiative Budget, funding specifically to fund a
    peer mentoring scheme commissioned by TPCT on
    behalf of the Drug Action Team and Safer
    Sunderland Partnership

Official Opening of the project

Where are we based
  • In a community bungalow between 8 10 Brancepeth
    Avenue, Fence Houses
  • Owned by Sunderland Housing Group (SHG)
  • Barnardos entered into a license for 1 year
  • SHG have agreed that the property will remain for
    community use for a 5 year period

Staffing Operational Times
  • The project employs 2 development workers one for
    37hrs, one for 29hrs a week, two play development
    workers for 11hrs a week and other support staff
  • The Hive Fence Houses is open 4 days a week
    Tuesday to Friday

What are we doing?
  • Parent/carer peer mentoring scheme
  • This is a pilot project which is currently
    providing
  • mentoring and drug awareness training for 13
  • parents/carers of whom we hope at least 6 will go
  • forward to become volunteers to support other
  • parents/carers in the Fence Houses area who have
  • a family member experiencing problems with
  • drug/substance use.

Future steps
  • The Fence Houses Steering Group will continue to
    work to secure the future of the project this
    will be based upon the outcomes of project
    monitoring and evaluation
  • The results will allow the Steering Group to
    share lessons learnt with the wider Sunderland
    community and if successful will form the basis
    of future funding bids
