  • Waste entering the site is increasing - average
    load 5.1 tonnes in 1996 to 5.7 tonnes in 2000
    (11 increase)
  • In both surveys over 60 of vehicles travelled
    between 16-32km to deposit waste

  • Conclusion
  • The quantity of waste entering landfill is
    increasing - landfill is still a cheap option
    average charge 20-25 tonne including tax (Euros
    31-39, 29-36) - some areas 15
  • A reduction in CD waste has been observed -
    largely an inert material and can be diverted to
    exempt sites. Estimated 22.6 million tonnes is
    entering exempt sites (Ecotec, 2000)
  • Legislation seems to have had a negligible
    impact but Waste Strategy 2000 and European
    Landfill Directive still in their infancy.
  • Future research will monitor the impact of this
    legislation
