High Rate Two Stage Anaerobic Treatment for
Distillery Waste
2
Generation of the waste
  • 1 liter alcohol distilled ? 15 liter wastewater
  • No. of distilleries Nearly 270, Maharashtra
    gt100, Alcohol gt1000 KiloL
  • Distillery waste generated 15,000 M3/d
  • Highly coloured - dark brown
  • High strength, COD 90,000-1,20,000 ppm BOD
    60,000 ppm, acidic pH 3-4,
  • high sulphate6-10 g/l, high potassium
  • Hence treatment necessary.

3
Options for Treatment
  • Concentration and incineration
  • Use as animal feed, organic fertilizer
  • not commercially viable
  • High salt and acidic pH.
  • Composting
  • slow process-12 to 14 weeks, large land
    requirement, unavailability of filler material,
seepage of waste, highly difficult to use in
    rainy season limited application

4
Aerobic Biological treatment
  • Highly energy intensive
  • Odour nuisance
  • High cost
  • Generation of large quantity of sludge
  • Hence not preferred

5
Anaerobic treatments
  • Advantages Energy Generation (Biogas), low
    sludge, less energy intensive
  • Commonly preferred method of treatment
  • Different reactor designs -
  • conventional , anaerobic contact, anaerobic
    filter, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB)
  • Different temperatures - ambient and high - 550 C

6
Problems Generally Encountered
  • High strength of waste demands dilution waste
    before treatment
  • Increases the volume of wastewater to be
treated- increase in reactor volume- increase in
    operational cost.
  • More land for final disposal,
  • Monophasic methods highly susceptible to changes
    in environmental conditions, shock-load,
  • Recovery of sour digester is difficult.

7
ARI MethodHigh Rate Two Stage Anaerobic Treatment
  • Raw waste is treated without dilution with water
  • Organic loading rate
  • 22-23 Kg COD/M3/day
  • Two stages - Acidogenic and Methanogenic reactor
  • Use of specially selected methanogens
  • Addition of nutrients in minute quantity
  • Recirculation of sludge.

8
Advantages of ARI Method
  • Water is not required for dilution
  • Comparatively smaller digester volume
  • Less space for secondary treatrment
  • 15-20 M3 biogas / M3 waste / day.
  • 55-60 methane.
  • Over 65 reduction in COD and 85 in BOD
  • Better control, withstand shock loads
  • Easy reestablishment of process in sour digester

From Lab to Field
