• MOM service account needs to be part of the local
  Administrators group on the agent computer
• It is possible to manually install agents
• The requirement still exists to install under
  administrative privilege

• Start the Setup executable
• Provides preinstallation checklist
• This will walk you through all the requirements
  prior to starting the setup process
• Setup task list is printable for planning
  purposes
• Installation and User Guides can be found on the
  MOM CD in the Documentation directory
• Review the release notes for issues not covered
  in the documentation

Installation Process (2)

• Run the Verify Prerequisites tool by selecting
  the option on the setup screen
• This tool will detail all software requirements,
  and then offer direct methods to install required
  software or walk you through configuration
  changes
• For example MSDTC log size, Browsecap.ini,
  Access 2000 runtime, and so forth
• When all prerequisites are satisfied, you can
  proceed with running setup

• Begin the setup process
• Enter user information and licensing information
• Identify directory in which to install MOM files
• Type of installation
• Typical, User Interfaces, Custom, and Express
• Based on the type of installation you choose, you
  will be prompted for which components to install

• Account information for the MOM service account
• Database information regarding where to store the
  database and log files for SQL, as well as size
  of database
• Configuration name for this installation
• WebConsole file location
• E-mail server for notification

• Whether to capture all events or events specific

• You may receive a prompt to stop certain
  dependent services during the installation
  process
• Setup normally takes 2045 minutes to complete,
  depending on selection of management packs to be
  installed

Server Installation Tips and Tricks

• Ensure service account is granted all required
  user rights prior to starting installation
• Ensure all prerequisites are met prior to
  beginning setup
• Installation of a MOM server on a domain
  controller is not supported
• Creating a test environment that emulates your
  production systems is encouraged

Deployment of Agents

• Deployment of agents is controlled through the
  Agent Manager
• Agent Manager is found in the MOM Administrator
  Console under Configuration Node
• Using the properties of the server, you will
  need to modify the Managed Computer Rules
• Post-installation tasks from the Setup menu
  detail the agent installation process

Managed Computer Rules

• Able to define either computers to include or
  exclude as MOM agents
• Supports wildcards, Boolean, and regular
  expressions
• After rules are defined, you must perform a scan
  to discover the computers
• After the scan completes, you need approve the
  computers prior to agent installation
• You can set approval to automatic, but it is
  recommended that you leave it as requires
  approval.

Manual Client Installation

• MOM CD has a directory for manually installing
  the agent
• Manual Agent Installation\Setup.exe
• Agent can be installed through an interactive
  setup process
• Agent can also be installed by using a scripted
  method such as Systems Management Server
• Appendix D of the Installation Guide details
  manual agent installation

Client Installation Tips and Tricks

• Ensure the MOM service account has administrative
  privileges on the agent to complete the install
• Ensure that the C share is available
• Troubleshooting information can be found in the
  MOM console
• Monitor Node, Public Views, Microsoft Operations
  Manager, Agent Manager, Agent Installation
  Failures.

General Recommendations

• Do create a lab for testing prior to implementing
• Do install MOM on a member server and assign the
  necessary rights to MOM service account
• Do roll out agents in a controlled manner
• Do not create managed computer rules such as
  domain , computer name
