Firefighter Safety
2
Firefighter Safety
  • Some
  • Thoughts
  • To
  • Ponder

3
Firefighter Safety
  • Aristotles Definition of a Tragedy
  • Well intentioned people, doing what they
  • thought was the right thing to do at the
  • time, and it turned out to be disastrous.

4
Firefighter Safety
  • In this business, there isnt any textbook
operations while an emergency is in progress,
only after it is under control!

5
Firefighter Safety
  • Training and Retraining are what reinforces our
every day performances and skills, leading to a
    safe work environment.

6
Firefighter Safety
  • Proper Leadership by Officers who also comply
with the same standards required of subordinates.

7
Firefighter Safety
  • We are all mortals and vulnerable.
  • Just because what we do is for the good of
mankind does not protect us from
  • Death or Injury.

8
Firefighter Safety
  • Courage is not the
  • absence of Fear,
  • But the Conquering
  • of
  • Fear!

9
Firefighter Safety
  • SAFETY BEGINS WITH PROPER ATTITUDE

10
Firefighter Safety
  • SAFETY IS
  • BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTION.

11
Firefighter Safety
  • YOU CANT DO THE JOB
  • WITHOUT PROPER
  • PROTECTIVE
  • EQUIPMENT.
  • GEAR UP ALL THE TIME!

12
Firefighter Safety
  • You are responding to an emergency you did not
create, but will do all you can to relieve
    suffering and mitigate the situation.
  • Sometimes success is beyond our control.
  • (Dont be so hard on ourselves!)

13
Firefighter Safety
  • OVER CONFIDENCE
  • LEADS TO
  • INJURY
  • AND
  • DEATH

14
Firefighter Safety
  • FEAR
  • IS A GOOD THING.
  • IT IS WHAT BRINGS
  • YOU BACK FOR THE
  • NEXT ALARM

15
Firefighter Safety
  • COMPLACENCY CAN GET YOU KILLED OR
  • INJURED. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU ARE
  • DOING AND STAY ALERT.

16
Firefighter Safety
  • Laziness
  • Ego
  • Macho Attitude
  • All lead to unsafe
  • practices.

17
Firefighter Safety
  • Safety is not an excuse for aggressive
    firefighting!
  • You can still be aggressive while staying safe.
  • There is a big difference between Safety and
  • Cowardice.

18
Firefighter Safety
  • You are not, Or will not be the most important
person at the scene of the emergency. You have to
get there safely before you can be of any value,
and if for some reason you cannot respond, then
    that is perfectly all right.

19
Firefighter Safety
  • Dont let the excitement of the Emergency cause
you to forget to use your better judgment!

20
Firefighter Safety
  • If you can think It,
  • It can happen.
  • If you dont prepare for
  • It,
  • It will happen!

21
Firefighter Safety
  • Hurt at Work
  • You've carefully thought out all the angles.
  • You've done it a thousand times.
  • It comes naturally to you.
  • You know what you're doing, its what you've been
trained to do your whole life.
  • Nothing could possibly go wrong, right ?

22
Think Again!

24
Firefighter Safety
Safety!
  • You Can Live With It!
  • and
  • It All Begins With Attitude!

  • THE DUMBEST GUY ON EARTH!This picture is real -
not doctored in any way - and was taken by a
Transportation Supervisor for a company that
delivers building materialsfor 84 Lumber. When
he saw it in the parking lot of IHOP, he went to
buy a camera to take pictures.

Firefighter Safety
  • The car is still running, as can be witnessed by
the exhaust. A woman is either asleep or
otherwise out in the front seat passenger side.
The driver was jogging up and down on Rt. 925.(in
    the background)Witnesses said their
physical/mental state was OTHER than normal. The
driver finally came back after the police were
called, and was found crouched behind the rear of
the car, attempting to cut the twine around
theload! Luckily, the police stopped him and had
    the load removed.

  • The materials were loaded at Home Depot. Their
store manager said they made the customer sign a
waiver. While the plywood and 2X4s are fairly
obvious, what you can t see is the back seat,
which contains -- are you ready for this? --10
bags of concrete _at_ 80 lbs. each. They estimated
the load weight at 3000 lbs. Both back tires
exploded, the wheels bent and the back shocks
were driven through the floorboard. The car, with
FLA(naturally) plates, was headed for Columbiana,
Al. wherethe couple presumably planned to build
    a new house.
