  • Inventor 2009

Step 1
  • Open Autodesk Inventor 2009
  • Open the Card Board Bridge ipt file from the
    assignment log
  • Use the View Cube to orient the view in a
    direction which you can work
  • Right click on Sketch 1 and select Edit Sketch

  • Use the video lesson Creating the Side Elevation
    - Cardboard Bridge from the assignment log to
    create the End Post (AI)
  • Continue to create the Verticals BI, CJ, DK

  • Your drawing should match this below before you
    use the mirror tool to create the rest of the
    Side Elevation
  • Offset Vertical BI 4mm
  • Then Offset CJ DK 6 mm.

Top Left Corner
The top left corner should look like Figure 1
once you have Offset Vertical BI 4 mm. Use Trim
and Extend to make it look like Figure 2.
The corner does not match up! THAT IS CORRECT

Step 4
  • Now your going to begin adding depth to each
    member of the Truss configuration.
  • Click on Extrude, place your cursor over the End
    Post and weight for the selection arrow to
    appear.
  • Scroll until only the End Post area is
    highlighted.
  • Enter a depth of 10mm.
  • Click OK

Step 5
Once you make an Extrusion the Sketch becomes
consumed in the Feature. You can continue to use
that Sketch if you Share it.
  • In the Browser Pain expand Extrusion 1
  • Right click on Sketch 1
  • Select Share Sketch

Step 6
Use the shared Sketch one to create further
extrusions. Lets extrude one of the Verticals
(BI).
  • Click on Zoom window to look at the left side.
  • Use Trim to remove excess lines to create Figure
    1.
  • Right click and select Finish Sketch
  • Select Extrude and change the Extents Distance to
    10 mm
  • Select Vertical BI and click OK (Figure 2)

Step 7
Repeat those steps for Verticals CJ DK. (You
may have to do some trim or extending to get
those areas to be enclosed shapes.)
  • Click on Zoom window to include Verticals CJ and
    DK.
  • Select Extrude
  • Change the Extents Distance to 10 mm
  • Select Verticals CJ and DK, click OK

Step 8
Now we are going to prepare for the Extrusion of
the Top Chord (10 mm.)
  • Click on Zoom window to the top left corner.
  • Right click on the shared Sketch 1 and select
    Edit Sketch.
  • Trim off any lines so you have an enclosed shape
    for the Top Chord.

This is what it should like before you attempt to
Extrude.

Step 9
Now we are going to Extrude the Top Chord 10 mm
  • Right click and select Finish Sketch
  • Click on Extrude and make sure the Extents is set
    to 10mm. Check the direction of the Extrusion.
  • Select the Profile (Top Chord) and select OK.

Now set up to Extrude the Bottom Chord. (1 mm)
  • Right click on shared Sketch 1 and select Edit
    Sketch.
  • Use Zoom Window to Zoom into the lower right
    corner of the Truss assembly.
  • Use Trim and Extend to create Figure 1.
  • Use Zoom Window to Zoom into the lower left
    corner of the Truss assembly.
  • You have to Trim off the bottom line of the
    Bottom Chord and redraw it (to create an enclosed
    shape to Extrude (Figure 2).

Now set up to Extrude the Bottom Chord. (1 mm)
CONTINUED..
  • Draw a Line from the bottom left corner to the
    vertical line of Vertical DK you created in Step
    10-Figure 1.
  • Extrude the Bottom Chord 1 mm.

Now create the Diagonals and Extrude 1 mm.
  • Right click on shared Sketch 1 and select Edit
    Sketch.
  • Draw the Center lines for the Diagonals as shown
    below.
  • Use Offset to create the parallel lines that are
    4 mm apart for each Diagonal.

Extrude both Diagonals 1 mm.
  • Select Extrude and repeat what you did for the
    other Diagonals.

Your model should look like this.

Now its time to Mirror the rest of the Truss
Configuration.
  • Select Mirror and click on each Extrusion that
    you have made in the Browser.
  • Click the Mirror Plan Button and select the face
    of the Bottom Chord.

  • Now click OK!

Now create the top of the bridge! (Top Struts and
Top Lateral Bracing)
  • This is the sketch that I used to create half of
    the Top.
  • Create the 6x6mm Top Struts spaced out as shown
    below.
  • Then create the Top Lateral Bracing in two
    separate Extrusions.
  • I Extruded and used Mirror to create the
    remainder of the part. (Notice that I made each
    set of Lateral Bracing in two Extrusions.)

Add a work plane to the Truss Configuration in
preparation for assembly. Remember, the distance
between the Front and Back is 90 mm (100 mm
center to center)
  • Start by creating a work plane down the center of
    your Truss Configuration. This will be used for
    constraining your Top in the correct location.
  • Select Work Plane from the Panel Bar, left click
    hold the mouse button down to activate the
    Offset box. Type in -5 mm as the value.
  • Click Enter

Create a new Standard (mm).iam. (Metric Assembly)
  • Insert 2 Truss Configurations
  • Offset them 100 mm from each other using the Work
    Planes you created. (This leaves 90 mm between
    them)

Insert the Top Structure and Constrain the Top
Surfaces.
  • Select Place Component from the Panel Bar and
    insert the Top Structure.
  • Constrain the Top Face of the Top Structure to
    the Top of the Truss Configuration.

Constrain the Top Structure to the Front Truss
Configuration Work Plane.
  • Select Constrain/ Mate and the Front Truss
    Configuration Work Plane.
  • Select the opposing face of the Top Structure as
    your second selection.
  • Click Apply

Notice that the Top Structure goes half way into
the Truss Structure

Step 21
Create the Portal Bracing and Struts.
  • Right Click in the assembly and select Create
    Component.
  • Name the New Component Portal Bracing.
  • Click on the face of the End Post to create the
    Portal Bracing (N, N)
  • Use Project Geometry to begin creating the sketch
    to the right.
  • Use Extrude to create the 6 mm Brace.

Now create the 1 x 4mm Diagonal Portal Bracing
  • Right click on the 6 x6 mm brace you just created
    and select New Sketch.
  • Create the Sketch illustrated to the right.
  • Use Extrude to create the 1 mm depth.

Now use Mirror to add the Portal Bracing to the
other side
  • Right click on the Portal Bracing and place your
    cursor over Component.
  • Select Mirror.

Now use Mirror to add the Portal Bracing to the
other side
  • In the Mirror Components Status Window Select
    Mirror Plane and select the plane illustrated
    here.
  • Click Next.

  • When the box below appears, click on Portal
    Bracing.
  • Click OK.

Now create the Bottom Chords between the area
illustrated below.
  • The Bottom Chords are 15 mm high and 6 mm wide.
    They are going to be aligned with the centerlines
    of the Verticals and flush to the bottom o f the
    bridge.

Create a sketch for extruding Bottom Chords
  • Place a work plane on the bottom of the bridge.
