Novell eDirectory
  • The Mason environment consists of many Server
    Operating Systems
  • eDirectory will run on any/all of these Operating
    Systems
  • A directory holds user objects, printers,
applications, workstation objects, etc and allows
    for granular access to resources
  • eDirectory is an industry standard LDAP directory
  • Directory enabled applications can all take
    advantage of a central directory
  • Single Username Password for all resources

Novell DirXML
Currently, every system is an island separate
from all others Novells DirXML can allow all of
these to work together A DirXML solution is a
solution not only for the current systems, but
for future systems and applications as well

Novell iPrint Open Standard based Printing
  • Web based installation of printers
  • Self service for the user
  • Queue-less printing for public printers
  • Uses open standards for printing LPR IPP

10
Novell iPrint Legacy Printers Secure Printing
  • Novell eliminates the need to replace older
    hardware that doesnt support IPP
  • iPrint server is an IPP gateway
  • IPP gateway allows for Private Public printers
  • Securely print from anywhere in the world

Novell ZEN Works Features
  • Directory Based Workstation Management
  • Application Distribution
  • Workstation Imaging (ghosting of workstations)
  • Workstation Inventory hardware software
  • Remote Control
  • Support Staff can remotely control a users
    workstation
  • Directory based System Policies (Microsoft
    Novell extended policies)

13
Novell ZEN Works Example
or
  • A person decides they want an application which
    isnt on their workstation
  • They call a support person, and request the
    application
  • The support person grants rights to the
    application
  • An icon shows up on the users desktop
  • When the user clicks on the icon, the application
    installs and then runs

14
Novell Summary - Weaknesses
  • NetWare isnt a great platform for running
applications (the server part of Client/Server)
  • Novell turns this into a strength by integrating
extremely well with so many other Server
Operating Systems and thus allowing you to
leverage the strengths of non-Novell platforms
  • Use a mix of Windows, NetWare and UNIX servers
whichever makes the most sense for what you are
trying to do use eDirectory to tie it all
    together

15
Novell Summary - Strengths
  • NetWare is an Open Solution
  • Accused of being just a file and print server,
Novell made NetWare 6 the ultimate file and print
system Any client anywhere on the Internet can
print, and use storage services, from a NetWare 6
server without loading a single byte of Novell's
    proprietary Client32 software. James Gaskin,
    NetworkWorldFusion
  • eDirectory is the most mature directory around
(since 1992) it runs on multiple platforms
  • We already own NetWare 6, eDirectory, ZEN Works
and the hardware to implement clustering
