7
Innovation in Islamic Countries
  • 20-25 of the worlds population are muslim
  • 30-40 countries in the world are populous muslim
    countries
  • Very low intellectual productivity
  • Lagging behind in innovation process
  • Why

?
8
Innovation in Islamic Countries
  • Importing the technologies from developed
    countries and using those technologies.
  • No significant RD activities for inventing own
    technology.
  • Science, Technology and Innovation A. Watkins,
    M. Ehst, The world Bank, 2008

Mysteriously, even World Bank does not
encourage RD for new technology in Developing
countries
9
Innovation in Islamic Countries
If we do not develop our own RD
  • Islamic countries will always be at the consumers
end and thus Islamic countries will become a
market for the technological product of the
    industrial countries. Islamic countries will
always lag behind in terms of economy and
    technology.

We should develop our technical skills and build
our own RD so that we can produce technological
products by ourselves.

11
Proposed Capacity Model
Our model works on two directions
Capacity Building
Research Development
Dissemination Utilization
12
Capacity Model
Socio-economic Development
Global RD
Dissemination Utilization
Local RD
13
Research and Development
RD should be conducted in two directions
RD includes but not limited to
Dimensions are
Establishment of research centers
To acquire and use existing knowledge
Formation of multidisciplinary research groups
To produce and use new knowledge
Monitoring body proper supervision
Collaboration between experts end users
Organize workshops, conference, etc regularly
14
Dissemination Utilization
Proposed directions to spread new technologies
RD or technology access center, whatever it
might be, it will be of no value unless and until
people are accessing these to enjoy the benefit
we must establish technology access centers
throughout the country to disseminate the
research findings, so that the end users can
avail new technologies from the nearby access
center
Government along with NGOs should conduct a
country wide campaign to popularize new
technologies

Research Units in Japanese Universities
  • There are well-planned and systematic research
    units (Laboratories) in Japanese Universities.
  • Each Unit Consists of
  • one professor,
  • one or two associate professors,
  • two to four research associates and
  • around 20 senior undergraduate
  • and graduate students.

18
Research Units in Japanese Universities
  • Regular weekly seminars and discussions on
research problems in the research units.
  • Every activity is laboratory based.
  • Senior students supervise research of junior
    students.

19
Japanese Policy for Research Success
  • Population of age group 20-35 are encouraged to
    do innovative research.
  • Foreign research workforce of age group 20-35 are
invited to Japan by various lucrative programs
like Scholarships, COE and JSPS programmes to
    work under senior Japanese professors.
  • Reputed foreign researchers are invited for
    encouraging and supervising junior Japanese
    researchers by JSPS programs.

20
Academia-Industry Collaboration in Japan
  • Surplus funds from the industry to universities
for doing research even merely doing theoretical
    research.
  • Many universities have developed industry
creation hatcheries where research on innovation
of new industrial products, training of manpower
are done jointly by industry and university
    people.

22
Innovation Processes in Bangladesh
  • Grameen Bank an example of successful
    innovation in Bangladesh.
  • The Grameen Bank Project came into operation with
    the following objectives
  • extend banking facilities to poor men and women
  • eliminate the exploitation of the poor by money
    lenders
  • create opportunities for self-employment for the
vast multitude of unemployed people in rural
    Bangladesh
  • bring the disadvantaged, mostly the women from
the poorest households, within the fold of an
organizational format which they can understand
    and manage by themselves
  • The bank and Dr. Md. Yunus, the founder were
jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, "for their
efforts to create economic and social
    development in 2006.

23
Innovation Processes in Bangladesh
  • Encouraging young generation in productive works
by creating festive competitive environment might
be an ingredient for successful innovative
    process.

Graph Drawing Research Group
  • Our aim is to develop and deploy graph drawing
algorithms for the purpose of information
    visualization.

28
Objectives of Graph Drawings
Nice drawing
structure of the graph is difficult to understand
structure of the graph is easy to understand
To obtain a nice representation of a graph so
that the structure of the graph is easily
understandable.

Outline
  • What are Innovation Processes?
  • Innovation Processes in Islamic Countries
  • Proposed Capacity Model
  • Research Experience in Japan
  • Innovation Processes in Bangladesh
  • Summary and Conclusion

45
Summary and Conclusion
  • Followings are some recommendations for making
    innovation processes successful.
  • Study and analyze the local needs and problems.
  • Give strength on research and development.
  • Establish effective research units in
universities of Islamic countries and create
Center of Excellence as an umbrella body to
monitor the activities of research units.
  • Establish strong industry-academia relationship
and motivate industries to provide financial
    assistance for supporting research projects.
  • Create facilities to encourage and motivate young
    generation for doing research.

46
Summary and Conclusion
  • Followings are some recommendations for making
    innovation processes successful.
  • Invite prominent Muslim researchers working in
the developed countries to work in their own
countries. (Note that Korea and China have
    already started this strategy. )
  • Establish technology access centers throughout
the cuntry to disseminate the research findings,
so that the end users can avail new technologies
    from the nearby assess centers.
  • Conduct a country wide campaign to popularize new
    technologies.
  • Three days notice is not enough to prepare an
    effective prescription for successful innovative
    processes !!!
