Coverage
  • Overview of CFC MDI phaseout situation Asia and
    the Pacific region
  • Awareness on CFC MDI phaseout in import dependent
    countries
  • Inputs sought from participants

3
Overview of CFC MDI consumption in Asia and the
Pacific region
  • Total estimated number of Asthma and COPD
patients world wide is about 300 million. Asia
Pacific regional estimates are expected to be
about 100 million and are experiencing a growth
rate of more than 20-25 per annum, as per
    industry sources.
  • MDI use for asthma and other lung related
diseases increasing due to increase in pollution
levels. Prevalence varies from about 1 of
population to more than 10 of population.
  • Due to higher economic growth and increase in
affordability, MDI sales is also increasing.
  • CFC MDI manufacturing companies located in
Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran and
    Pakistan.
  • A few companies (e.g., CIPLA (India), Beximco
(Bangladesh) etc.) are already manufacturing and
selling CFC free alternatives to CFC MDIs.

4
Production of CFC MDIs in the region
  • Only 6 producers of CFC MDIs in the region.
  • Projects to phaseout CFCs in most of the
    manufacturers under preparation or under
    implementation.
  • MDI manufacturers, in general, produce other
pharma products thus have an extensive reach
    through their medical representative network.
  • They have interests in enhancing awareness on
    adoption of CFC free MDIs.

5
CFC MDI phaseout in countries dependent on
imports for MDIs
  • Does not directly affect Montreal Protocol
    compliance status.
  • Phaseout predominantly driven by supply situation
of MDIs if key suppliers are producing CFC free
alternatives to CFC based MDIs, then markets are
    adopting these alternatives.
  • Very limited awareness programs taken up by
Governments through their National Ozone Units on
    CFC MDI phaseout.
  • Interfaces with Health Ministry, Drug Regulators
and practitioners on MDI phaseout are evolving.
  • Consumer awareness especially relating to OTC
sales of medicines - may add to the momentum of
    adoption of CFC free alternatives.
