1
Guiding Circles An Aboriginal Approach to Career
Pathing
2
The Aboriginal Human Resource Council
  • National organization focussed in Aboriginal
    recruitment, retention and advancement
  • Products, programs, and projects are designed to
    create effective partnerships, resources and
tools to advance the full participation f
Aboriginal workers in Canadas economy .

3
Career Opportunities What we know
  • Aboriginal communities have been experiencing a
    baby boom
  • Labour shortage is and will continue to occur in
    Canada
  • However, Aboriginal people are still not finding
a good fit with these opportunities.
  • The Aboriginal person is twice as likely to exit
the career coaching process after the first visit
when compared to non-Aboriginal people. (Amundson
    McCormick).

4
What do we need?
  • We are in need of a innovative solution to meet
the needs of finding meaningful work
    opportunities for Aboriginal people.
  • Career pathing done with meaningful
    self-assessment leads to many benefits
  • Higher self esteem of the individual because they
have a true, positive sense of self.
  • Increased awareness of the community members
about the individual as a gifted person with
talents, goals, and a contribution to make.
  • Improved retention for employers right person in
    the right position
  • Reduction in costs for recruitment by companies
  • Long-term ability for companies to plan for
    advancement

5
Traditional Career Counselling
  • When did it begin?
  • In the time of the second world war, to place new
recruits into positions for the armycontinued
when they returned home, to place them into jobs
    in the companies back home.
  • Models were highly based on testing for male
American skills based testing for occupations
that existed in the communities at that time
  • Over time this approach has grown and evolved but
many tests today still assume the individual
knows their skill sets well enough to complete
    these tests.

Career Success
Guiding Circles Approach
Articulate skills/aptitudes
7
What does your career path look like?
  • For example as a teenager did you envision
    yourself doing this exact job?
  • What were your dreams?
  • Was your path clear and linear, one step in front
    of the other?
  • Or was it a journey with twists and turns,
perhaps some stops along the way?

8
Career Journey continues
  • For most people in life the path is not often
linear, there are obstacles to overcome and we
    must get back on track
  • Sometimes new opportunities arise we did not see
    before.
  • Yet, most of the career coaching strategies
assume a linear path what can we do?

9
The Guiding Circles Approach
  • Developed with partners Dr. Norm Amundson, Gray
    Poehnell and Dr. Rod McCormick
  • Combines contemporary career coaching techniques
    with Aboriginal perspectives
  • Holistic and involves input and feedback from
    others
  • Started in 2003 with a demonstration project and
has continues to grow with much success
  • Program consists of workbooks for clients and
    training for facilitators

10
The Career Circle
11
Booklet 1 Understanding Yourself
  • Individual completes a self series of fun
activities to complete portions of the career
    circle
  • We know that individual self assessment is at its
best incomplete so we also involve community to
    provide feedback
  • By completion of booklet individual has a
positive, focused, self reflection complete and a
few ideas about career and the journey process.

12
Booklet 2 Finding New Possibilities
  • Individual takes the information from Booklet 1
and continues now towards generating career
    possibilities.
  • May also explore if they have the entrepreneurial
    spirit
  • Narrows ideas down to a few and researches
career circles of those opportunities to
    compare to their own circle
  • Learns about decision making and puts together
the beginning of a career path with the
    involvement and feedback of others

13
My Favourite Things
  • What are 12 things I like to do?
  • How long since I last did each of these 12
    things?
  • Does it cost () or is it free (F)?
  • Is it planned (P) or spontaneous (S)?
  • Do I do it alone (A) or with someone else (SE)?
  • Does it involve mind (M), body (B), emotion (E),
    or a combination?

14
Activity Debrief
  • Did you see any patterns in your favourite
    things?
  • Does anything surprise you?
  • Did you feel uncomfortable doing this activity?
  • Did it take much time?
  • Did you have fun?

15
Guiding Circles is.
  • A people based approach to the hard questions
involving preparing ourselves for the working
    world.
  • It digs right into the inside of the person. It
    focuses on the individual
  • Very good practical, useful and relatively easy
    process to implement
  • You get to look at the reality of life.

16
How can I use Guiding Circles?
  • Attend a training session to learn more about how
    to engage individuals into career
  • Tell your network or community about the program
  • Invite your employer to sponsor books for schools
and training for teachers in your community
