• Birmingham was one of the most segregated cities
  in the South.
• Whites Only signs were present throughout the
  city.
• Blacks could not use the same water fountains,
  movie theaters, bathrooms, lunch counters or
  schools as whites.

The four little girls

• On September 15, 1963, a bomb exploded at the
  Sixteenth Street Baptist Church killing four
  black girls, Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair,
  Cynthia Wesley and Carole Robertson, and blinding
  another, Sarah Collins. The bombing received
  worldwide attention.
