Learning with eLectures

• Current situationalmost all lectures are
  recorded

Production

• Live-recording during the lecture using a
  microphone and a Wacom desk
• Only minor postprocessing by one student
  required mostly automatic
• A few hours after the lecturethe recordings are
  online

The eLecture-Portal Archiving

• Archival of the entire computer science
  curriculum
• Other disciplines are also listed (Microsystems
  Engineering, Psychology...)

• Automatic indexing of all lectures
• Slides
• Metadata
• Audio
• Automatic speech transcription to index
  additional data
• Mapping of original slides to the recorded
  document
• Optimized user interface (e.g. one-click
  access to position of the hit)

Getting the most out of the documents

• Analyzing metadata

• Whole computer science curriculum can be accessed
  online
• One lecture has between 10 and 100mb (varies
  depending on the format)
• 50.000 visits this year already ( 5000
  visits/month)
• 6000 hits/day
• 25 TB data downloaded (in 2006 so far)
• 3-600 gb/month

Current Work Podcasting

• Converting the recorded lectures to podcasts
• RSS Feeds to inform the Students about new
  Recordings

Conclusion/Outlook

• Heavy use of the portal by our students
• Problem of handling such a large amount of data
• Consider enhancing and changing technologies
  (e.g. Podcasting)
• Permission problem
• Professors dont want their material to be
  accessible by everyone
• Property rights?
• Stealing/trading of contents
