The drawings that you will see in this
presentation are housed at Emporia State
University Archives in the prestigious May Massee
Collection. The collection includes original
book illustrations by 56 artists who worked for
May Massee at Doubleday and Viking Press between
1923 and 1963. The collection is available for
research or viewing. Gallery hours correspond
with business and reference hours, listed

The May Massee Collection

May Massee, 1883-1966
  • Teacher for one year as a teenager, then attended
    library school and became childrens librarian at
    Buffalo, NY public library
  • Booklist editor for ALA
  • Freelanced as a Chicago-area literary agent,
    represented Carl Sandburg
  • In 1922, became childrens book editor at
    Doubleday
  • From 1932-1960, ran Junior Books division at
    Viking Press, Inc.
  • Continued at Viking as consulting editor until
    1964

May Massees accomplishments
  • Between 1923 and 1933, May established two of the
    first three childrens book divisions at major
    publishing houses
  • Bridged the gap between childrens book
    publishing, selling and librarianship
  • Compiled a stable of talented authors and
    illustrators, who went on to win Viking Press a
    higher proportion of awards and honors, such as
    the Caldecott and Newbery awards, than any other
    publishing house in the history of childrens
    book publishing
