Title: Lecture 01 Introduction to Organisational Behaviour and Management

1
Lecture 01 Introduction to Organisational
Behaviour and Management
  • MGT1000 Organisational Behaviour and Management
  • Bernadette Lynch
  • Semester 1 2005

2
Lecture objectives
  • By the end of this lecture you should
  • Understand what to expect of this course e.g. the
assessment requirements and time commitments of
    this course
  • Understand what tasks you need to complete this
    week to settle into study
  • Have a measure of your mastery of one of this
    weeks learning objectives

3
What to expect Contact with Course Examiner
Bernadette
  • You can expect regular email contact from me.
  • But I cant email you if you do not update your
    email address with USQConnect
  • The best way to contact me is by email.
  • I will try to respond to all emails within 3 days
but there may be some times - for example around
assessment time - when that may not be possible.

4
What to expect Contact with Course Examiner
Bernadette
  • Do contact me and expect timely support if
something very bad happens that compromises your
study e.g. illness, death in the family.
  • Do contact me if you have done the reading and
the work but still have some questions about the
    learning objectives.
  • Do expect me to treat you as an adult in our
    interactions.

5
What to expect Contact with Course Examiner
Bernadette
  • Do not expect to use me as a personal study
buddy alternative to doing the required reading
and study to complete the course.
  • Do not use me as an alternative to reading the
    administrative information provided in the
    Introductory Book.
  • Every minute I spend dealing with those kinds of
unnecessary queries means less time spent
    developing quizzes, lectures, learning activities
that would be of assistance to all students.

6
What to expect Contact with Course Examiner
Bernadette
  • Dropping by my office or phoning are not good
ways to contact me as my office is not the only
place I work and I have other work commitments
    over this semester
  • Contact me by email
  • Directly - lynchb_at_usq.edu.au
  • Through outreach (students studying in Australia)
    outreach_at_usq.edu.au
  • Through International Office (Students studying
    outside Australia) iosupport_at_usq.edu.au

7
What to expect Other places to get support
  • Student Services
  • http//www.usq.edu.au/studentservices/default.htm
  • OPACS Office of preparatory academic study
  • http//www.usq.edu.au/opacs/learningsupport/studle
    arnsupport/default.htm
  • Other students
  • You

8
What to expect - Time requirements
  • You can expect to spend about 13 hours per week
every week for 12 weeks of the semester on this
    course.
  • You will spend 2 hours per week at the lecture
and the rest (9 hours) you need to do privately
  • In your private time you will need to
  • Read a weekly module from the study guide (4 11
pages) and the required sections from the text
    (about 30 pages).
  • Undertake essay preparation

9
What to expect - Time requirements
  • We dont have tutorials in this course as we have
found increasingly students do not attend them
regularly, particularly towards the end of
    semester.
  • Students tell us they dont attend because they
have part time and full time work commitments,
family commitments and they want a life.

10
What to expect - Time requirements
  • Students tell us they want some human contact
with staff and other students - access to a small
focussed range of user friendly learning
materials and to control their own time.
  • That is what we try to supply.

11
What to expect - Lectures
  • The lectures are NOT an alternative to reading
    the text.
  • The lectures are a chance to link up with other
students and a chance to check and consolidate
    your progress.

12
What to expect - Lectures
  • I will give a 50 minute lecture that will assist
    you with your study
  • We will then have about 50 minutes of activities
in the lecture period in which you will link up
with other students and complete learning tasks.
  • We have this mix of learning tasks and social
    activities as research indicates that
establishing a social network and study regime
within the first few weeks of study greatly
    increases students chances of success.

13
What to expect - Assessment requirements
  • Assignment 1 A 2000 word essay based on a case
    study (45) Due May 9th
  • Assignment 2 A Learning Diary reflecting on
your experience of writing the assignment (5)
    Due May 9th
  • Exam a 50 item multiple choice exam (50)
  • To be eligible to pass you need to submit all
items and achieve an aggregate mark of at least
50 of the total available marks

14
What to expect - Assessment requirements
  • The essay assignment is based on theory covered
in week 7 (Module 5). The assignment is due in
week 11. You can skip ahead to Module 5 anytime
you want to commence essay preparation
  • Weeks 9 10 (Modules 7 8) of the course are
set aside for you to write your essay. These
modules have a little information on how to
conduct research for your essay and how to
actually write an essay. You can skip ahead and
look at those modules any time you like.

15
This Weeks Must Do Tasks for Internal Students
  • Buy the text
  • Buy the Intro Book, Study Book and CD
  • If these are not available from the bookstore the
Introductory Book and Modules 1, 2 3 from the
Study Book are on the course webpage at
  • ltwww.usq.edu.au/course/material/MGT1000gt

16
Where do you begin?
  • Start with the Welcome Letter in the green soft
covered Introductory Book. It will explain
  • How to use the Introductory book
  • How to contact me
  • My extension policy
  • Then open the Study Guide at Module One and start
    reading
  • Then read the required sections from the text
  • Use the quizzes and PowerPoint slides on the CD
    if they seem useful

17
  • BREAK

18
An exercise to help you start your study using
the PASS Strategy
19
The PASS strategy
  • The PASS Strategy and is taken from the OPACS
    site.
  • PASS involves approaching your study in ½ hour
blocks. The letters PASS stand for Plan, the
Act, then Survey your work, then take a Short
    break

20
The PASS strategy
  • The four steps of the PASS strategy
  • PLAN - Spend 2 minutes planning what you will do
  • ACT - 25 minutes doing it
  • SURVEY - 3 minutes surveying or reviewing what
    you have covered
  • BREAK - Then take a break

21
We will now use the pass strategy to cover one of
this weeks learning objectives.
22
PASS - Plan
  • The first 2 minutes of your half-hour you spend
deciding on and jotting down your plan - exactly
what you are going to do or learn in the
    remainder of the half-hour.
  • I have decided we will start with module 1

23
You ask the following questions in the planning
step
  • Am I focussing on something that relates to the
    course assessment?
  • Yes module 1 is tested on the exam

24
You ask the following questions in the planning
step
  • What action will I take?
  • Take notes from the text ?Draw a mind map? Use a
highlighter? Make margin notes? You need to
decide this yourself. You might want to talk to
the person next to you about this.

25
You ask the following questions in the planning
step
  • What specific part of the course will I aim to
    cover?
  • Is this achievable?
  • Specifically complete the text reading for the
learning objective Describe what managers do
(read pages 4 - 9 of the text)
  • Yes, maybe. Some of you will complete this
reading easily in 20 minutes and some of you will
not. You will find it will take you longer if
this is the first time you have read this
    material.

26
PASS - Act
  • This is when you DO IT!
  • You now carry out your planned actions on the
specific sections of your study material for the
next 20 minutes (Usually you would spend 25
minutes, but we have shortened this as this
activity is occurring in a lecture).
  • Remember to be actively engaged by highlighting,
underlining, making notes, tables, or diagrams,
seeing how these ideas fit with the module
objectives and other ideas in the subject.

27
  • Stop reading your time minutes is up

28
PASS - Survey
  • Spend the final 3 minutes surveying or reviewing
what you have just done, making some record of
what you have learned. This step is a crucial one
in reinforcing what you have just covered and
    making it easier to remember.
  • Your survey also needs to be an active one.

29
PASS Short break
  • Now it's time to stop and take a 2-minute break.
Relax, stretch, get a drink, give yourself a
small reward. Then begin another effective and
    efficient half-hour!
  • After two PASS half-hours, take a longer break of
5 minutes, after three PASS half-hours a good
break of 20 minutes and perhaps a change of
subject. After five PASS half-hours it is
probably time to finish study until later in the
day, or carry over to the next day.

30
But there is no break for you now. Prepare for a
short quiz.
31
Food for Thought
  • Did the idea of working in ½ hour blocks work for
    you or not?
  • Can you usually concentrate for ½ an hour would
    shorter or longer be better?
  • Do you usually set goals for yourself in your
    study?
  • Can you see any benefit in doing this?

32
Food for Thought
  • How did you do on the quiz?
  • Dont get too worried if you did not do too well.
You still have plenty of time to really study
this material. The question is were you as
efficient and active in your reading as you could
    have been?
  • How did you find the survey time? Have you ever
    used this before?
  • Can you think of a way to improve this strategy?

33
Lecture objectives
  • By the end of this lecture you should
  • Understand what to expect of this course e.g. the
assessment requirements and time commitments of
    this course
  • Understand what tasks you need to complete this
    week to settle into study
  • Have a measure of your mastery of one of this
