Title: Practicum
1Practicum Internship
2Who Has to Do This?
- All programs require a practicum (100 hours)
- All majors require an internship (600 or 900
hours depending on your major) - Exceptions
- Business and Organizational Management
- Counseling Exceptional Children
- However, if B O and CEC majors are working
toward PC license, they must do an internship
3Grade Requirements
- A letter grade of B or above must be earned in
the following three core classes in order to be
eligible for Practicum and Internship (PI). - RHB 701 Counseling Theory and Practice
- CNL 863 Techniques of Counseling
- EDL 751 Educational Statistics and Research
4P I Prerequisites Supervisors
- Each major has specified its own set of
prerequisite courses that must be completed. - Please check your manual to make sure you will
have taken these courses prior to beginning PI. - You must have a B or higher in all prerequisites
- Prerequisites cannot be taken concurrently with
PI - If you are working towards a PC license, you must
be supervised by a PCC with supervisor
designation (PCC-S).
5Manuals Important!
- There are separate manuals for practicum and
internship. - Download your practicum manual according to the
course you are required to take. (ex. CNL 865,
RHB 865 practicum manual) - The CNL 865 Practicum for Counseling Manual
Forms are for Mental Health Counseling, Community
Counseling, Marriage and Family Counseling, AND
School Counseling majors. - Download your internship manual according to your
major (ex. CNL 867 Mental Health Counseling) from
website http//www.cehs.wright.edu/academic/human
_services/clinical_experience.phpmanuals - Manuals are on the left side of the page.
- Read these manuals carefully!
6Finding a Site
- Begin your search for a site several months prior
to the quarter you wish to begin practicum (many
sites require students to do both practicum and
internship at the same site). - There is a binder in M052 CAC with student
evaluations of their sites. This is a good
resource. - Ask your academic advisor for possible sites.
- Word of mouth from students currently doing PI
is another way to learn of sites. - Contact your site of interest and ask how their
process works typically they will ask for a
resume and arrange for an interview.
7Background Checks
- If you are going to apply for Counselor Trainee
status, you must get the Ohio BCI and FBI
background checks (including fingerprints) - Students have had problems with these in the past
(fingerprints not showing up, the results not
coming in on time, etc.), so it is very important
that you try to get these done two (2) quarters
before you plan on applying for Practicum and
Internship.
8PI Step 1
- Complete and submit application to Graduate
Assistant for Practicum and Internship in M052
CAC (This must be done each quarter). - Application is Appendix 1 (in both practicum and
internship manuals). - Submit a copy of your academic advising report
from Wings Express (Unofficial Transcript). This
must be done each quarter. - Complete the Program of Study form and have it
signed by your advisor and Dr. Fortson.
9Step 1 (cont.) Proof of Insurance
- Submit proof of insurance with application (This
must be done each quarter). - Options for insurance are in a binder in M052
CAC. - Many organizations (e.g., ACA, AMHCA, ASCA, etc.)
provide student discounts for insurance. - Proof of insurance should include the students
name, companys name, dates of coverage, and come
from the company (e.g., copy of policy,
acceptance letter, etc.) - The GA will not accept checks or applications for
insurance
10PI Step 1 (cont.)
- RHB majors are required to submit a resume and
proof of membership in a professional counseling
organization (ARCA or NARCA) in addition to the
information above. - It is possible that CNL majors will also have to
join an organization in the near future - After this information is received, you will be
sent a detailed letter telling what you need to
do next and by what date. - Please read this letter carefully!
11PI Step 2
- Complete and return to Graduate Assistant for PI
in M052 CAC (each quarter) - Appendix 2 Contract (to be completed by student)
- Student must obtain site supervisors and their
own signatures before submitting - The GA will then take Appendix 2 to the
university supervisor to sign - Appendix 3 Site Supervisor information sheet (to
be completed by site supervisor) - Attach a copy of your site supervisors license
to this appendix. - Appendix 4 Site information sheet (to be
completed by student)
12PI Step 2 (cont.)
- If Counselor Trainee status is required for your
site, PI must be registered with CSWMFT Board
each quarter. This can be done by completing the
Trainee Supervision Agreement Form and submitting
it to the board. - The Trainee Supervision Agreement form should be
retrieved from the CSWMFT board at
www.cswmft.ohio.gov/forms.stm - This form should be completed and sent to the
board by the student along with a copy of the
students schedule from Wings Express and the
site supervisors professional disclosure
statement. - These forms must be completed for the practicum
and the first quarter of internship. Subsequent
quarters of internship require only that the
student submit a copy of their schedule to the
board along with a request to renew counselor
trainee status.
13PI Step 2 (cont.)
- Copies of this paperwork (minus the schedule as
you will not be able to register for your course
until all paperwork has been submitted) should
be submitted to the graduate assistant along with
Appendix 2,3 4 two weeks after the application
is due. Copies of this paperwork will only be
necessary if you are applying for practicum or
the first quarter of your internship.
14PI Step 2 (cont.)
- After appendices 2,3,4, (Contract, Site
Supervisor Information Sheet, and the Site
Information Sheet) and copies of the supervisors
license and trainee supervision agreement form
(for those required to register) are received,
you will be notified that a registration slip is
available for you to pick up in M052 CAC. It is
the students responsibility to take this to the
Registrars Office. (If you are a distance
learning student, you can request that the
registration slip be mailed to you to sign, once
signed you can mail/fax slip to the Registrars
Office.) - Again, a copy of your class schedule is needed to
obtain Counselor Trainee status with the board.
In order to be eligible to register, all
paperwork must be completed and turned in to the
graduate assistant. - Please submit paperwork all at once. If one item
is incomplete, all forms will be returned for
resubmission. Again, please be sure to have all
signatures before submitting.
15PI Step 3
- The following will need to be submitted to the
University Supervisor at the completion of PI
each quarter - Appendix 5 Site supervisor evaluation of student
- Appendix 6 Students practicum/internship
placement evaluation - please turn in one copy of A. 6 to your
University Supervisor and one copy of A. 6 to the
P I Graduate Assistant - Appendix 7 Time log
- Please keep copies of your time logs for your
records
16PI Step 3 (cont.)
- Students with Counselor Trainee status must
report hours to the CSWMFT Board. The forms to
use should be retrieved from the boards site
http//cswmft.ohio.gov/forms.stm - Practicum hours no longer need to submitted to
the Board, but you should keep these for your own
records. - Internship hours should be reported using the
Internship Supervision Evaluation form. This must
be submitted within 30 days of completing the
entire internship.
17PI Checklist

practicum and internship. - Step 1 submit
