Disc 2 The Great River to the ending credits
(Scene 42-47) (111 minutes-end of movie)
The Lord of the Rings
Fellowship of the Ring- part 6
Strong suggestion For each of the groups of
questions, keep the questions together and ask
them as though they are one question with many
parts. Also just assume that a yes/no question
should be followed by some questions such as how
and why in order to spark discussion.
1. Stop the movie as Frodo runs up the hill
wearing the Ring, after Boromir attempts to take
the Ring. After Boromir threatens Frodo, who
escapes, he seems to feel abandoned. Do you ever
feel like youve been abandoned, especially after
succumbing to temptation? Is that feeling
justified? Resume movie. 2. Stop the movie
after Aragorn rejects the Ring and tells Frodo he
would have gone the distance with him, into the
very depths of Mordor. Weve seen the Ring
speak in different to different characters.
Does temptation speak different ways to different
people? Can you relate to any of these
characters temptations? Can you relate to any
of their responses to temptation? Resume
movie. 3. Stop the movie after Boromirs death
scene. Merry Pippin made the decision to be a
distraction to let Frodo get away. Do you think
they thought long and hard about this decision?
Do situations sometimes call for quick action,
that maybe youll have reasons to regret later?
What can help you make a tough decision like
that, especially when it needs to be a snap
decision? Bible passage Ephesians 611-13 4.
Boromir seems to have really paid for his
fascination for the Ring. Do think this is fair?
Is his fate connected to the temptation, or is
there something else going on here? (Answer
help his death has more to do with turning
around and defending the Hobbits than his
fascination with the Ring itself, though that
helps set these events in motion) Bible passage
1 John 19

5. Stop the movie as the credits roll. Frodo
flashes back to Gandalf saying all you have to
decide is what to do with the time that is given
to you. How does this speak to you? Gandalf
also seemed to imply at the time that things
happen for a reason (which means that you also
were meant to have the Ring. And that is an
encouraging thought.) Do you find this an
encouraging thought? 6. Sam is keeping a promise
to Gandalf to stay by Frodos side. How does
this compare to Jesus promise and remember, I
am with you always, to the end of the age.
(Matthew 2820b)? Bible passage Luke
923-26 7. Whats the point of all this violence
at the end? Do the blood and guts help convey
anything important? If youve read the books,
you know that Tolkien mostly didnt write about
this stuff, but director Peter Jackson spends a
lot of time on the action scenes, especially
bloody ones. How do feel about the directors
decision to include so much violence?
