2PRIDEs Beginning
- The PRIDE initiative was launched in the summer
of 1997 by U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers and the
late James Bickford, former Secretary of the
Kentucky Natural Resources Cabinet - Organized as a grassroots effort to encourage
citizens to take personal responsibility for
protecting their environment

3The Organization
- Eastern Kentucky PRIDE, Inc., was formed as a
nonprofit organization to coordinate the
initiative and operate grant programs to fund
local efforts to accomplish the PRIDE goals. - Volunteers, schools, local governments and other
nonprofit organizations do the work. - PRIDE is funded by a grant from the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
