Title: Loudoun County Public Schools

1
  • Loudoun County Public Schools
  • Energy and Environmental Design Practices

2
Site Management
  • Sustainable Sites LCPS is in Compliance with
  • Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Handbook
    (VESCH)
  • Loudoun County Low Impact Design (LID)
    requirements
  • Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)
  • U. S. Army Corp of Engineers (COE)
  • Bioretention ponds at Hamilton, Sugarland and
    Sycolin Creek
  • Wetlands created at Mountain View
  • Reduced Site Disturbance/Restore Green Space
  • Athletic and school facilities shared with Parks,
Recreation and Community Services ( PRCS )
  • School facilities are used by numerous community
    organizations
  • Light Pollution Reduction
  • Full cut off parking and security lighting
    fixtures are in use
  • Stadium and competition athletic fields use fully
    shielded sports lighting

3
Transportation
  • Alternative Fuel
  • Transitioning to hybrid general use vehicles 35
    in use
  • Budgeting for use of bio-diesel fuel in fiscal
    year 2009
  • Pollutant Reduction
  • Established no idle policy with few exceptions
  • Retro-fitted all buses with emissions reducing
    diesel oxidation catalysts
  • Purchasing environmentally friendly equipment
  • Recycling
  • All motor oil and anti-freeze is recycled

4
Water Efficiency
  • Water Efficient Landscaping
  • Landscaping complies with County and Town
    facilities standards
  • Irrigation used only on competition playing
fields (due to excessive use with shared
    programs)
  • Pilot program for storm water capture and re-use
is in concept design for stadium irrigation at
    Woodgrove High School (HS3)
  • Innovative Wastewater Technologies/Water Use
    Reduction
  • Low flow toilets are in use
  • Pilot program for waterless urinals is currently
in concept design for Woodgrove High School (HS3)

5
Energy and Atmosphere
  • Commissioning
  • All energy systems in new facilities are
commissioned by design engineers and LCPS
    mechanical engineering staff
  • All existing systems are monitored and managed
for the life of the facility
  • Energy Performance
  • All new facilities are in compliance with ASHRAE
    minimum energy standard 90.1
  • All new facilities are controlled by energy
management systems (EMCS) to optimize HVAC and
    lighting efficiency
  • Green Power
  • LCPS has accumulated over 21,800,000 in cost
avoidance since 1993, equating to 121,000 acres
of trees planted, and ranks LCPS third in the
    nation in energy cost avoidance
  • Electricity suppliers to LCPS enhance the supply
grid with several renewable power plants

6
Materials and Resources
  • Storage and Collection of Recyclables
  • LCPS operates a fleet of refuge and recycling
    vehicles
  • Recyclable materials are separated and collected
    daily
  • Building/Resource Re-Use
  • Recycled concrete and asphalt is encouraged on
    construction sites
  • Construction Waste Management
  • Construction waste management is encouraged on
    projects.
  • Local/Regional Materials
  • Facilities are constructed with masonry products
located within the LEED recommended distance for
    minimizing fuel cost

7
Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Indoor Air Quality
  • All projects are in compliance with ASHRAE 62
  • Renovation projects are monitored and tested for
    indoor air quality during construction
  • All facilities are non-smoking
  • Indoor Pollutant Control
  • Separate exhaust and plumbing systems are
installed in art rooms, tech ed rooms, the
    gymnasium, and locker rooms
  • LCPS employs several low VOC products
  • Light and Temperature Control
  • Each classroom has separate control devices
programmed with a range of comfort, precluding
    excessive temperature swings
  • Classrooms have two or three levels of lighting
    control
  • Daylight Views
  • Each classroom has windows created by use of
    interior courtyards

8
Design Process
  • Architectural and Engineering Services
  • All current architectural and engineering firms
engaged in design contracts employ professionals
with sustainable design training and credentials
