I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was
one of two things I had a right to, liberty or
death if I could not have one, I would have the
other.

love without power is sentimental and anemic.
  • Power at its best is love implementing the

Prayer for Today
  • God Be with You
  • And also with you.
  • Let us pray
  • What is love, Jesus? It seems so important,
Jesus, that you called on the Father to forgive
your torturers because, as you put it, they
didnt know what they were doing. But you kept
    on loving, even then.

28
Prayer for Today
  • Help us to learn from you, Lord, how to keep on
loving when we feel like hating. Its hard.
Some of us have even turned your cross into a
symbol of hate. When the Ku Klux Klan burns a
cross, Lord, the blasphemy of it startles me.
Doesnt this mean, in a very real sense, joining
the ranks of your own executioners?
    Nevertheless, you were actively, creatively,
responsibly loving, even on the cross, Jesus.
Help us to see that love for what it is in all
its fierce passion and sweep of forgiveness.
  • Amen.
  • By Malcolm Boyd, Are You
    Running With Me, Jesus?

A Reading from 1 Corinthians 134-13
  • No matter what I say, what I believe, and what I
do, I'm bankrupt without love.    Love never
gives up.    Love cares more for others than for
self.    Love doesn't want what it doesn't have.

30
   Love doesn't strut,    Doesn't have a swelled
head,    Doesn't force itself on others,
Isn't always "me first,"    Doesn't fly off
the handle,    Doesn't keep score of the sins of
others,    Doesn't revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,    Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,    Never looks
back,    But keeps going to the end.
31
  • Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over
some day praying in tongues will end
understanding will reach its limit. We know only
a portion of the truth, and what we say about God
is always incomplete. But when the Complete
arrives, our incompletes will be canceled.
  • When I was an infant at my mother's breast, I
gurgled and cooed like any infant. When I grew
up, I left those infant ways for good.

32
  • We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting
in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be
long before the weather clears and the sun shines
bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as
clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just
    as he knows us!
  • But for right now, until that completeness, we
have three things to do to lead us toward that
consummation Trust steadily in God, hope
unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of
    the three is love.
  • The Word of the Lord
  • Thanks be to God.

Responsorial I Still Havent Found What Im
Looking For
I have climbed the highest mountains I have run
through the fields Only to be with you Only to be
with you. I have run, I have crawled I have
scaled these city walls These city walls Only to
be with you. But I still haven't found what I'm
looking for. But I still haven't found what I'm
looking for.
34
I have kissed honey lips Felt the healing in her
finger tips It burned like fire (I was) burning
inside her. I have spoke with the tongue of
angels I have held the hand of a devil It was
warm in the night I was cold as a stone. But I
still haven't found what I'm looking for. But I
still haven't found what I'm looking for.
35
I believe in the Kingdom Come Then all the
colours will bleed into one Bleed into one. But
yes, I'm still running. You broke the bonds And
you loosed the chains Carried the cross of my
shame Oh my shame, you know I believe it. But I
still haven't found what I'm looking for. But I
still haven't found what I'm looking for.
36
But I still haven't found what I'm looking
for. But I still haven't found what I'm looking
for.
37
Gospel
  • This is the Gospel according to Matthew (51-12)
  • Glory to you Lord Jesus
  • When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds,
he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed
to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving
at a quiet place, he sat down and taught his
climbing companions. This is what he said
  • "You're blessed when you're at the end of your
rope. With less of you there is more of God and
    his rule.
  • "You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is
most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced
by the One most dear to you.

38
  • "You're blessed when you're content with just who
you areno more, no less. That's the moment you
find yourselves proud owners of everything that
    can't be bought.
  • "You're blessed when you've worked up a good
appetite for God. He's food and drink in the best
    meal you'll ever eat.
  • "You're blessed when you care. At the moment of
being 'care-full,' you find yourselves cared for.
  • "You're blessed when you get your inside
worldyour mind and heartput right. Then you can
see God in the outside world.
  • "You're blessed when you can show people how to
cooperate instead of compete or fight. That's
when you discover who you really are, and your
    place in God's family.
  • "You're blessed when your commitment to God
provokes persecution. The persecution drives you
    even deeper into God's kingdom.

39
  • "Not only thatcount yourselves blessed every
time people put you down or throw you out or
speak lies about you to discredit me. What it
means is that the truth is too close for comfort
    and they are uncomfortable.
  • You can be glad when that happensgive a cheer,
even!for though they don't like it, I do! And
all heaven applauds. And know that you are in
good company. My prophets and witnesses have
always gotten into this kind of trouble.
  • The Gospel of the Lord!
  • Thanks be to God!

Sermon Response 40

I waited patiently for the Lord. He inclined
and heard my cry. He brought me up out of the
pit. Out of the miry clay. I will sing, sing a
new song. I will sing, sing a new song.
42
How long to sing this song? How long to sing
this song? How long, how long, how long How long
to sing this song? You set my feet upon
a rock And made my footsteps firm. Many will
see, many will see and hear.

43

I will sing, sing a new song. I will sing, sing
a new song. I will sing, sing a new song. I
will sing, sing a new song. How long to sing
this song? How long to sing this song? How long
to sing this song? How long to sing this song?

Prayers
Open our voices, O Singer of Souls our search
for you is never-ending. You know how much our
hearts long for heaven, for peace. We yearn to
hear and sing a new song - your song. We look to
Jesus in the hope of seeing you, and we listen
for your voice in the music of our
lives. Singer of souls, open our voices! Open
our hearts, O Giver of Gifts, to be transformed
by the outpouring of your compassion, so that we
may be willing to serve others with humility,
integrity and urgency, remembering that in you we
are ONE. Giver of Gifts, open our.
51
  • Open our eyes, O Maker of Life, to the hurts and
needs of others that challenge us in routine of
our lives, especially the 100 million children
without education, the one person in seven
without clean drinking water, the 38 million
people with HIV/AIDS. Teach us to see where our
own abilities and resourcesand the worlds deep
    hungermeet.
  • Maker of Life, open our eyes.
  • Open our hands, O Spirit, to be your instruments
of witness. Help us to work without caution, to
serve without recognition, and to do justice,
love kindness, and walk humbly with you, our God.
  • Spirit, open our hands.

52
  • Open our memories, O Savior of All, let us
remember those who have died, the children who
die every 3 seconds of hunger, the 500,000 women
who die in childbirth each year, and the
thousands who have died of HIV/AIDS today.
  • Savior of All, open our memories.
  • God, you are our goal. We run to you, run to
you, to you alone. Bless our questions, guide
our journeys, meet us and embrace us in the arms
of Jesus. Run with us, Jesus - never leave us
hopeless, never leave us adrift! We put our
hearts and souls in your hands, Lord, trusting in
your Spirit and in the Resurrection from the dead
of your beloved and our Redeemer, Jesus the
    Christ.
  • Amen

adapted from prayers by the Rev. Devon Anderson
in Womens Uncommon Prayers, Morehouse, 2000)

Confessional When Love Comes To Town
  • I was a sailor, I was lost at sea
  • I was under the waves before love rescued me.
  • I was a fighter, I could turn on a thread
  • Now I stand accused of the things I've said.
  • When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
  • When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that
    flame.
  • Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
  • But I did what I did before love came to town.

Rallying for Debt Cancellation, April 9th 2000,

55
  • Used to make love under a red sunset
  • I was making promises I was soon to forget.
  • She was pale as the lace of her wedding gown
  • But I left her standing before love came to town.
  • I ran into a juke-joint when I heard a guitar
    scream
  • The notes were turning blue, I was dazed and in a
    dream.
  • As the music played I saw my life turn around
  • That was the day before love came to town.

56
  • When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
  • When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that
    flame.
  • Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
  • But I did what I did before love came to town.

Sub-Saharan African countries pay an estimated
30 billion repaying debts to the wealthy
countries of the world.
Often they spend so much servicing their debt
that they have little left over for health or
education.
The cost of cancelling all debts to the 52 most
indebted countries In the world would be one
penny per day for each person in the
industrialized world.
Forgive us our debts, Lord,
as we can forgive debts to others

Ending poverty will require more than just
providing direct aid
we must also facilitate the economic processes
that allow countries to maintain growth and
improvements in the lives of their citizens.
Debt relief frees the money to make this happen

  • I was there when they crucified my Lord
  • I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his
    sword.
  • I threw the dice when they pierced his side

The Great Thanksgiving
  • Celebrant The Lord be with you.
  • People And also with you.
  • Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
  • People We lift them up to God.
  • Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our
    God.
  • People It is right to give our thanks and
    praise.

71
  • Celebrant
  • We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious
God, source of life abundant. From before time
you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved
over the deep and brought all things into being
sun, moon, and stars earth, winds, and waters
    and every living thing.
  • You made us in your image, and taught us to walk
in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and
wandered far away and yet, as a mother cares
for her children, you would not forget us.

72
  • Time and again you called us to live in the
    fullness of your love.
  • And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in
the chorus of praise that rings through eternity,
lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing
  • Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
  • heaven and earth are full of your glory.
  • Hosanna in the highest.
  • Blessed is the one
  • who comes in the name of the Lord.
  • Hosanna in the highest.

73
The Celebrant continues Glory and honor and
praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver
us from the power of sin and death and to reveal
the riches of your grace, you looked with favor
upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might
conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of
God.
74
  • Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread
with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and
proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to
draw all the world to himself yet we were
heedless of his call to walk in love.

75
  • Then, the time came for him to complete upon the
cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be
    glorified by you.

76
  • On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at
table with his friends. He took bread, gave
thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and
said Take, eat This is my Body, which is given
for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

77
  • As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine.
Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them,
and said Drink this, all of you This is my
Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out
for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it, do this for the
    remembrance of me.

78
  • Now gathered at your table, O God of all
creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and
risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to
you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a
living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these
gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of
Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth
and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ
given for the world you have made.

79
  • In the fullness of time bring us, with Paul and
all your saints, from every tribe and language
and people and nation, to feast at the banquet
prepared from the foundation of the world.
Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor,
glory, and praise, for ever and ever.
  • AMEN.

80
The Lords Prayer
  • Let us pray in the words our savior Jesus Christ
    taught us
  • Our Father in heaven
  • Hallowed be your name
  • Your kingdom come
  • Your will be done on earth as in heaven.
  • Give us today our daily bread.

81
  • Forgive us our sins
  • as we forgive those who sin against us.
  • Save us from the time of trial,
  • And deliver us from evil.
  • For the kingdom, the power
  • and the glory are yours,
  • Now and forever. Amen.

82
The Invitation
  • Celebrant We break this bread
  • to share in the Body of Christ.
  • People We who are many are one body,
  • for we all share in the one bread.
  • These are the gifts of God for the people of God.
Take them in remembrance that Christ gave himself
for Love of you, and feed on him in your hearts
    by faith with thanksgiving.

83

got someone to blame? You say one love, one
life, when it's one need in the night. One
love, we get to share it Leaves you baby if you
don't care for it.

Walk on, walk on What you got they cant steal
it No they cant even feel it Walk on, walk
on... Stay safe tonight
96
You're packing a suitcase for a place none of us
has been A place that has to be believed to be
seen You could have flown away A singing bird in
an open cage Who will only fly, only fly for
freedom
97
Walk on, walk on What you got they cant deny
it Cant sell it, cant buy it Walk on, walk
on... Stay safe tonight
98
And I know it aches And your heart it breaks And
you can only take so much Walk on, walk on
99
8000 people die every day of AIDS, a
preventable and treatable disease.
God I need your help tonight
6500 of them are in Africa
Together, with Gods help, we can beat AIDS.
Infection rates among young people are increasing
at a rate higher than for any other group.
100
Home hard to know what it is if youve never had
one Home I cant say where it is but I know I'm
going Home that's where the hurt is
101
And I know it aches And your heart it breaks And
you can only take so much Walk on, walk on
102
Leave it behind You've got to leave it behind All
that you fashion All that you make All that you
build All that you break All that you measure All
that you feel All this you can leave behind All
that you reason All that you sense All that you
scheme All you dress up All that you see

Recessional Beautiful Day
The heart is a bloom, shoots up through stony
ground But there's no room, no space to rent in
this town You're out of luck and the reason that
you had to care, The traffic is stuck and you're
not moving anywhere. You thought youd found a
friend to take you out of this place Someone you
could lend a hand in return for grace
107
It's a beautiful day, the sky falls And you feel
like it's a beautiful day Its a beautiful
day Dont let it get away
108
Youre on the road but youve got no
destination Youre in the mud, in the maze of her
imagination You love this town even if it doesnt
ring true Youve been all over and its been all
over you
109
It's a beautiful day Dont let it get away It's
a beautiful day Dont let it get away
110
Touch me, take me to that other place Teach
me, I know Im not a hopeless case
111
See the world in green and blue See China right
in front of you See the canyons broken by
cloud See the tuna fleets clearing the sea
out See the Bedouin fires at night See the oil
fields at first light See the bird with a leaf in
her mouth After the flood all the colours came
out It was a beautiful day A beautiful day Dont
let it get away
112
Touch me, take me to that other place Reach me,
I know Im not a hopeless case
113
What you dont have you dont need it now What
you dont know you can feel it somehow What you
dont have you dont need it now You dont need
it now, you dont need it now
114
  • Its a beautiful day
