What is bullying?
  • Bullying is a big problem that affects many
    children. Bullying can make school a place of
    fear and can lead to violence and stress.
    Bullying happens when someone hurts or scares
    another person on purpose and the person being
    bullied has a hard time defending themselves.

  • Different Acts of Bullying
  • Punching, shoving and other acts that hurt people
    physically
  • Spreading bad rumors about people
  • Keeping certain people out of a "group"
  • Teasing people in a mean way
  • Getting certain people to "gang up" on others
  • Mean text messages, IMs, or e-mails

  • Risk Factors for being Bullied
  • Children and youth who are bullied are typically
  • Insecure and suffer from low self esteem
  • Socially isolated and lack social skills
  • Tense, anxious, and afraid
  • Devastating for some with long-term consequences
  • Children who bullied are more likely to get into
    fights, vandalize property, and drop out of
    school later in life.
  • students may stay home on any given day because
    they're afraid of being bullied

What Can You Do?
  • Dont keep it to yourself-tell an adult
  • Dont Bully back
  • Stand up for yourself
  • Ignore the people who bully
  • Stay calm and dont act upset or angry
  • Refuse to join in- dont just sit back and watch
    it happen to others

Everyone has the right to be respected and the
responsibility to respect others.

  • National, nonprofit organization created by
    students that promotes respect by helping
    students of all ages how to care for each other.
  • SAVE's mission is to decrease the potential for
    violence in schools and communities by promoting
    meaningful student involvement, education and
    service opportunities in efforts to provide safer
    environments for learning.

System
  • New wide spread emergency notification system
    known as CUNY Alert.
  • Register for alerts on Bannerweb!!
  • The proposed system would
  • warn students, staff and faculty, both on and
    off campus, during emergencies.
  • send out the alerts including group e-mails,
    instant text messages, and telephone broadcast
    messages.
