Option 1 The BIG question
  • 1 piece of information/advice/data/idea from this
    session with an employer?

7
Option 2 Grad or IP?
Example 1 Application forms
Example 2 Phone interviews
CANDIDATE 1 Business awareness He said he had
found out about what we do from the website. When
asked what that was he said 'like kind of support
the company with certain technology.supply them
with solutions' . He did not demonstrate evidence
of research (-) and did not appear to understand
our marketplace, (-)business areas (-), or
services. (-) Regarding Space and Defence 'um
it's a bit unclear but as far as I know my guess
is that you may work for people like the MOD
maybe'. When asked about competitors he said
'like SAP or something yeah? Other than that no'.
When asked about a preference for an IT company
rather than department he said 'I guess just any
experience to be honest'.
CANDIDATE 1 Planning and Initiative
Voluntary contribution for all community
events. The latest one involved helping organise
a procession ehld in April, which involved
promoting the event, sorting out security,
contacting all involved parties to make them
aware of the procession. The procession went
extremely well learning planning is a vital
attribute to success
CANDIDATE 2 Planning and initiative As an
event organiser I am regularly required to apply
my planning, initiative and communication skills.
I recently organised a paintball trip for twenty
five students from my course, I initially began
by finding when the event could be booked, based
on this I created a temporary booking and
advertised the event. From this I created a
register which held the names and contact details
of potential attendees. After collecting the
money from the individuals in the list they were
then ticked off as confirmed attendees. After all
the bookings had been filled I informed the
confirmed attendees of the meeting point and
route we would be taking. The event was
successful and I achieved what I intended to do
which was to relieve my fellow students from
stress. From the experience I realised that I
must make an exception for extra people attending
CANDIDATE 2 Business awareness She had
clearly undertaken thorough research into
LogicaCMG and spoke fluently about the different
market sectors and services as well as naming key
competitors (). She had a very good
understanding of the SD function and gave a
credible explanation for wanting to work for an
IT company as opposed to an IT department due to
the variety of projects, technologies and clients
she will be exposed to (). She told me she keeps
up to date in the IT field via various internet
news sites mainly BBC and also reads journals
and is a member of the BCS and receives
periodicals from them aswell ().

Option 3 The Apprentice
Making the difference between a hire or a fire
  • Application
  • Give us something to go on
  • Attitude
  • Set the tone for your students
  • The attitude of a grad
  • Can lead to a permanent offer
  • Preparation
  • Presenting themselves
  • Often a minority on the day
  • What happened at the phone interview?

9
Option 4 Blooming employers!
  • Ways we can make things easier and more effective
    for you and your students?

10
Option 5 - Trends in 2007 and beyond
Grad market continues to be challenging
School leaver program overtakes our IP Program
Our IP Program E-X-P-A-N-D-S
Keep S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G the IPs
Impact of tuition fees on popularity of degrees
with placements?
IPs as marketing resource
11
Option 6 Sleepless nights
  • Whats keeping you up at night?

Whats keeping us up at night?
12
Option 7 Stats, stats and more stats
Consistently 10-15 of graduate population
recruited are IPs Typically 25 out of 230 a year
  • IPs given permanent offers after placement
  • 2005 78
  • 2006 65
  • 2007 60-70
  • IP cost to hire
  • 1.25 million a year
  • Charge out IPs at 170 a day to clients
  • Add in half a day managers time to mentor/support
    extra 100k per year

13
Option 8 The Hot spot IPs on you
Were regular lectures to keep us motivated in
our search
  • Ive never met my placement team face to face

Very friendly and genuinely cared
Organised, helpful and always on hand
Id like more regular contact during my
placement
It was pretty impersonal
We kept being told you should have a placement
by now, but Id have liked more guidance on the
recruitment process
Have access to a forum of fellow IPs whilst out
on placement
The cv writing assistance was particularly
welcomepart that most of us struggled on
Full info on vacancies currently availableeven
outside term time
None of the placements were relevant to my
degree
Almost all of the companies I applied to I found
through my uni
I didnt use any of my Universitys services to
get my placement
My placement officer kept changing
Residential weekends/on line sources/hints and
tips on doing well at assessment centres, group
exercises and phone interviews
Info about what its really like on placement
would have been helpful. Most info came from
students on placements or ex IPs
Placement mentors whod been there and done it
I found my placement through another
universitys website
