Synonym

• A Synonym is a word which has the same , or
  almost the same, meaning as another word.
• For example shut and close.
• Using Synonyms helps you to avoid repetition and
  makes your writing more interesting.
• You can find these in your dictionary, or
  thesaurus, but make sure that you use the same
  part of speech. Look carefully at the definitions
  before making your choice.

• For instance we say
• Please shut the door, OR
• Please close the door.
• Note The meaning has not changed.
• Another exampleWe close or shut a book.

• However this ones different-
• We say The celebrations closed with fireworks.
• We DO NOT say the celebrations shut with
  fireworks
• The use of shut instead of close is inappropriate
  in this case.
