standards in writing and mathematics are
declining because young people are spending too
much time
listening to the gramophone. The Times 1912

Curriculum concerns
HMI Curriculum Matters 1985
"There is so much knowledge that is potentially
useful or of intrinsic interest that syllabuses
are often over laden with factual content built
up by unregulated accumulation or tradition. In
view of this schools need to be highly selective
when deciding what is taught."
QCA Monitoring 2005
"There is still a perception that the curriculum
is overloaded... delegates continued to regard
the curriculum as too full. In practice many find
it difficult to incorporate newer ideas,
including citizenship. The constraining factors
include content overload, staffing problems and
the perceived narrowness of the standards
agenda..."

L2L context
  • In 20 of lessons for year 7, Learning to Learn
skills will be a key objective for the lesson
    alongside subject objectives
  • These lessons will begin with a generic
presentation, specific to the element of the L2L
    area
  • Hence, 20 pre-prepared generic presentations are
    to be used

Demonstrating Highlighting
  • 3 facts about the Tudors
  • Girls could marry at age 12, boys at age 14!
They still had to live with their parents until
    they were 16 though.
  • Baths weren't considered healthy so Tudors just
covered up the awful smell with strong perfume
  • Toilets were called 'Privies' and were not very
private at all. They were often just a piece of
wood over a hole in the ground and might have
room for up to 6 people to go at the same time!
