UK GEO Activities
  • UK Official Point of Contact for GEO is Dr. Ruth
    Kelman who works for the Department of
    Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra).
  • This recognises the GEO emphasis on supporting
    Applications.
  • Other UK Organisations involved including
  • BNSC British National Space Centre
  • NERC National Environmental Research Council
  • UK Met Office covering climate (GCOS) and
    weather issues
  • Support for GEO currently not well co-ordinated.
  • BNSC support mainly routed through CEOS WGISS
    WGCV.

BNSC supported projects
  • Sea Surface Temperature Measurement Continuity.
  • Sensor Web Development (OSCAR).
  • Co-operation with Argentina on exploitation of
    L-band SAR data.
  • Contribution to the GEOSS Clearing House
    Development.
  • Support for leader of GEO DEM Interoperability
    Task (DA-07-01).
  • Update to UCL ICEDS EO Information System as
    contribution to GEOSS.

Conclusions
  • NERC supporting UK academic research, currently
    evaluating GEO support
  • Includes support for GOOS (e.g. Argo profiling
    float programme
  • Defra supporting UK input to GCOS (via UK Met
    Office).
  • BNSC supporting small projects contributing to
    Geo Tasks.
  • Also providing support for Charter for Disaster
    management.
  • And support for IGOS (e.g. Geo-hazards) to me
    integrated into GEO
  • Improved co-ordination of GEO related activities
    being planned.
