Title: Lesson outcomes

1
Lesson outcomes
  • I understand that conflict is linked to
    population growth

2
Environmental conflicts are much more common in
the last few hundred years due to the industrial
revolution and the rapid rise in the worlds
population. The number of humans has nearly
always been below 0.5 billion, but in the last
few centuries there has been a rapid increase to
nearly 7 billion. The result of this, is a rapid
increase in the use of the worlds natural
resources and a dramatic increase in the dumping
of waste materials. To meet this population
increase urban areas have increased in number and
size . Rural areas have also been effected as
natural vegetation has been destroyed to produce
more farmland which is essential for the
increased food demands.

Pressures
  • London and the south-east of England are among
the most densely populated areas in the world
  • All cities take up less than 2 of the Earth's
land surface, but use 75 of the resources we
    take from the Earth.
  • In other words, they have large ecological
    footprints.

5
Activity
  • In pairs list 5 ways in which you regularly
    create conflict with the environment
  • Complete task 4

6
Problems for rural areas
  • Rural services, such as sanitary septic systems,
wells and roads, have become over-used,
contributing to pollution, health, and safety
    problems.
  • In some locations, traffic congestion has
    increased significantly

7
Changing Farming landscape
  • The push for production has caused great damage
    to the countryside
  • modern farming involves the use of chemical
fertilisers, insecticides and herbicides (used to
    kill unwanted plants)
  • Why do you think farmers use these chemicals?

8
Changing Farming landscape
  • chemicals continue to work after they have been
washed off the land into rivers and the water
    supply
  • Some farmers have chosen to go "organic", which
means they do not rely on artificial chemicals.

9
Activity
  • Complete task 5 the diagram and questions
