Integrated Science Business Major
  • The focus of the ISBM is to develop integrated
    thinking from the initial stages of education and
    to produce well-trained graduates who are highly
    effective in entry-level positions that require
    skills in both science and business.
  • ISBM homepage

ISBM Water Resources Emphasis
  • Specifically geared toward students interested in
    working in water-related businesses.
  • Introductory courses in Biology, Chemistry and
    Physical Geography (20 units) are combined with
    relevant upper level courses (12 units) to give
    students a broad background in the science of
    water.
  • In addition, the emphasis requires core business
    courses (30 units) combined with upper level
    courses addressing topics relevant to the
    business of water (6 units).
  • At the end of the program, capstone courses,
    including an internship and senior project,
    directly link science and business and prepare
    students for subsequent employment in
    water-related businesses.

  • Offered back-to-back in spring 2010 to allow for
    course integration in the form of guest speakers
    and student projects

Natural Resource and Environmental Economics
  • Topics include
  • Markets and the efficient allocation of resources
    over time.
  • Market failure - property rights, externalities,
    public goods.
  • Valuation of environmental benefits and costs.
  • Economics of renewable and non-renewable natural
    resources - land, water, fisheries, forests,
    energy, minerals.
  • Pollution abatement and environmental protection.
  • Global issues - population, climate change,
    tropical deforestation, the oceans and atmosphere
    as global commons.

Water Law
  • This course covers the fundamentals of water law.
    Topics include
  • prior appropriation
  • water marketing
  • riparian rights
  • ground water law
  • water district law,
  • resolving interstate water conflicts
  • federal and Indian water rights
  • environmental law impacts on water rights
  • legal aspects of water security
  • Particular attention is paid to Wisconsin and
    Great Lakes region water law issues.

Interdisciplinary Water Expertise Team
  • A group of passionate educators from across the
    UW-Whitewater campus with a common goal to
    educate students and the community about water
    issues.
  • Team members recently submitted a UW-W Strategic
    Initiatives Grant Program proposal to seek
    internal funding. External funding is also being
    sought.
