  • Hadmon will see remnant protons
  • Muon Monitors see whatever escapes beam dump
    (muons?)

2
Commissioning Beamline Monitors
  • Hadron Monitor
  • Alignment of support structures (done during
    absorber assembly)
  • Practice of removal of base through slot (also
    during absorber assembly)
  • Leak check of device prior to final insertion
  • Confirmation of adequate helium venting
  • HV check of chambers
  • Checkout of Electronics (internal calibration
    feature), ACnet data logging
  • Time in signal gates (Pedestal and in spill) with
    respect to beam spill time
  • Muon Monitors
  • Alignment of support structures
  • Aligment of detectors after mounting
  • Leak check of detectors after mounting
  • Confirmation of adequate helium venting
  • HV check of chambers
  • Checkout of Electronics, ACnet data logging
  • Calibration Plateau Curves with no beam
  • Time in signal gates (Pedestal, in spill, and
calibration gates) with respect to beam spill time

3
Commissioning at Low Intensity(1011 1012 ppp)
  • Perform Intensity scans with target in
  • Calibrate rates versus toroid measurement
  • LE,ME,HE positions required
  • Perform High Voltage Scan

Intensity scan at low Intensity Checks
Linearity Of devices And determines m Monitor
response Vs target position
4
Commissioning at Low Intensity(1011 1012 ppp)
  • Measurements with no target
  • Sweep proton beam across hadron monitor with no
    target
  • Confirm bpm/sem position and angles
  • Coordinate with cross-hair study
  • Find any possible cracks in hadron absorber?
  • Background rates in
  • muon alcoves and
  • hadron monitor from
  • neutrons
  • Intensity scan useful here too

5
Commissioning at Low Intensity(1011 1012 ppp)
  • Scan target with proton beam
  • In coordination with target Budal monitor studies
  • Compare with predictionsthese are probably very
hard distributions to predict because of the
    large neutron production uncertainties
  • Will be useful as spill-by-spill test of target
    integrity

6
Commissioning at High Intensity(1013 ppp)
  • Intensity scan with target in, perform HV scan
  • LE position
  • ME position
  • HE position
  • Move horn 1 by 3mm
  • LE,ME,HE position
  • Could also be done at lower
  • intensity
  • Turn off horn, leave target in
  • Measure neutron background rates in muon alcoves

7
Summary
  • Intensity Scans important
  • Low to check monitor response
  • High to check ability to spot problems during run
  • Horn Current Scans important
  • Low current to check neutron backgrounds
  • High current for physics checks
  • Want Low Medium High Energy Target positions
  • As target moves back, horn position changes are
    much more pronounced
  • Most monitoring commissioing requests will be
  • Redundant with other requests (crosshair, Budal,
    etc)
