  • Restricted Certificates of Registration

3
Community Stats
  • 400,000 population, rapidly growing community

    between GP/Specialists)
  • 36 of the total received their medical education
    outside Canada
  • 46 of the specialists are IMGs
  • Range practicing for a few months to practicing
    for decades

4
Work with WE-IMG
  • Linked with the local IMG leadership
  • Using our network to assist
  • medical community (observerships)
  • hospitals (medical staff libraries and other
    resources)
  • media (keep the community aware of the issues
    facing IMGs)
  • Going forward- mentoring program - match IMGs
with physician mentors who can help them
navigate the process (provide information, advice
and access to their own network)

5
Educate yourself
  • Know what your licensing options are (in and
    outside of Ontario)
  • Clearly map your path to a license //understand
where you are and what exactly you need to do in
    order to achieve licensure
  • Clearly map (and document) what may be required
    in your particular situation

6
Educate your recruiter
  • This includes local physicians, hospital and
    medical administrators, Chiefs of Staff
  • Dont assume that they know what the current
policies and processes are with respect to
registration or what you are presenting with

7
Educate your recruiter
  • Avoid being a victim of easy screening - some
medical staffs will not accept physicians who do
not have a license for Independent Practice in
Ontario. They are not familiar with restricted
registrations and many dont know how to deal
with applications through the CPSO registration
    committee, supervision guidelines, reporting to
the College during the term of the restrictions,
    etc.

8
Educate your recruiter
  • Make it easy for the recruiting organization to
recruit youprovide them with all of the
information they will require /anticipate and
answer all of the questions that they may
    encounter
  • Provide information from the CPSO, Royal College,
CMPA, HRDC, contact names and contact
information, any documents and samples of letters
    that might be required

9
  • Help your local recruiter to see you as a
    resource,
  • a future solution to their recruitment
    requirements

10
Integrate yourself with the local medical
community
  • Dont count on these people to be able to help
you through the registration process thoughmost
do not keep current with the latest processes and
policies from the Ministry and the College and
while they are often liberal in offering advice
and their opinions, it is often incorrect.

11
Integrate yourself with the local medical
community
  • Learn the things they can teach you
  • -running an office
  • dealing with patients
  • working within the health system i.e. making
    referrals, working with allied health
    professionals
  • maintaining medical records
  • OHIP billing procedures

12
Find a Mentor
  • Try to develop a relationship with a mentor,
someone who can help you with access to
    information and resources
  • Once you have successfully achieved your license,
dont forget where you came from
  • BE A MENTORhelp the next individual along the
    path
